Military Veteran applicants are those who qualify for VA educational benefits through current or prior service in the United States Military. To assist veterans interested in NMU we have partnered with the following programs:

  • NMU is a designated 'Military Friendly' college by G.I. Jobs magazine
  • NMU is a CONap partner institution
  • NMU is a Post 9/11 GI Bill Yellow Ribbon Program partner

For general information on benefits eligibility, advice on career paths, and details on veterans, dependents, and survivor benefits, please look at: http://www.va.gov/benefits.

Veterans or those currently serving in the United States Armed Forces and their covered individuals automatically qualify for resident tuition rates, but must supply documentation of status as a veteran, active military member, or covered individual (spouse, dependent, or individual using educational assistance*).  * Includes, but is not limited to, any individual using educational assistance under either Chapter 30 (Montgomery GI Bill® – Active Duty Program), Chapter 33 (Post-9/11 GI Bill®), of title 38, United States Code, and/or the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship (38 U.S.C. § 3311(b)(9)) while attending Northern Michigan University.

Please visit nmu.edu/residency for more information.

If your goal is to enroll at NMU and use your educational benefits, we have several checklists for you which may be helpful.  These are the general steps:

  1. Apply for Admission to NMU
  2. Apply for VA educational benefits (see checklist below)
  3. Upon notification of admission to NMU, refer to the admitted student checklist.

It is highly suggested that applicants apply to NMU while concurrently starting the veteran benefits process.  For information on applying to NMU, please select the appropriate link:

First-Year or Freshmen Students Applicants are those who have not attended any college or university after high school.

Transfer Students Applicants are those who have attended a college or university after high school graduation. Applicants who have completed fewer than 12 semester credit hours (or 18 quarter hours) of college-level course work will be reviewed based on both high school and college performance. (*If you have coursework from Military Service school see below.)

Re-Entry Students are students who have been previously enrolled at NMU in an undergraduate program.

Post-Baccalaureate Students are those applicants who hold a baccalaureate or higher degree, but who wish to pursue another undergraduate degree (in a field other than that of previous degree/s) or those who plan seek an initial secondary or elementary provisional teaching certificate. Post-baccalaureate applicants and will be admitted to NMU providing they have graduated from an accredited college or university. Individual academic programs may have additional requirements for admission.

*Transfers from Military Service Schools

Northern Michigan University generally follows the guidelines of the American Council of Education in evaluating military credit. Credits from military schools and courses from the Community College of the Air Force are assigned general elective credit. They can be used as general electives, but also may meet major or minor requirements upon the recommendation of a departmental adviser.

NMU does not grant Health Promotion/Physical Education (HP) activity credit for basic (recruit) training or for credit at the upper-division level. However, students who have completed basic training and have a recommendation on their military transcripts for physical well being, physical fitness or other descriptions of material covered in NMU’s HP 200 Physical Well Being, will receive transfer credit for that course.

All other military training transcripts can be accessed through the Joint Services Transcript (JST) webpage. The JST covers all branches except for the Air Force.
