How do I know you received my transcripts?
You can check the status of your admissions application at Application Status Check. Please note that it takes up to 10 days to process admissions documents.
How do I pay my application fee?
Graduate application fees may be paid online through the application portal. Payments may also be made over the phone by calling the Student Service Center.
How should I have Letters of Recommendation submitted?
There are two routes in which letters may be submitted. The first is to supply the name and email address for your recommenders into the appropriate portion of the application portal when prompted. Your recommenders will receive an automated email from our system.
The second route is for those recommenders who may have trouble with the link provided in the automated email. We encourage any recommenders who fall in this category to feel free to email their letter of recommendation directly to us at graduate@nmu.edu. The Graduate Studies staff will then attach the letter to your application.
What is a Statement of Purpose/Letter of Intent?
A statement of purpose or letter of intent are short documents that give you the opportunity to let the application committee know your plans and aspirations for the future and how attaining the degree that you are applying for will help you attain those goals. Each program that requires a statement or letter may be looking for something just a little bit different. Am I able to visit campus before I apply?
Absolutely! You can register online for a virtual or in-person campus visit.
Transfer
Is it possible to transfer to NMU during my Master's degree?
Yes, you may transfer to NMU during your degree. Refer to the transfer credit policy for requirements and details about transferring to NMU to complete your degree.
Can I transfer class credits from another institution for a class in my program?
Yes, there is a transfer credit form that needs to be completed and submitted by your advisor.

Can you get scholarships as a graduate student?

Can international students get funding for graduate school?
International students cannot apply for Federal Student Aid. Graduate assistantships may be available; refer to the GA webpage for more infomation.
International Students
Do I have to provide proof of English proficiency? Which tests are accepted?
Yes, proof of English proficiency is required if you are from a non-English speaking country. You can do this in several ways. Please see this page for more information.
Is there funding for international students?
There is no guaranteed funding for international students. Information about scholarships for international students may be found on the International Programs Office website.
Do international students have to submit official transcripts? What if there's an issue submitting official transcripts due to a college strike?
NMU requires a transcript evaluation from anyone who has attended school outside of the US. See the International Programs website for services they can request a transcript from. If an international student has heard from the evaluation company that they are unable to verify the documents because of a strike, that correspondance needs to be forwarded on to NMU.
Housing
Is there on-campus housing for graduate students?
There is limited on-campus housing for graduate students. Please see the housing website for more information.
What is the rental situation like in Marquette?
There are many rentals in Marquette and the surrounding areas. NMU has a list of off-campus housing online.
Help Desk/IT
Does NMU provide laptops for graduate students?
Yes. You can find more information about this through the Help Desk.
Can part-time students get a laptop?
Part-time students may participate in the laptop program for a fee. Contact the IT Help Desk for more information.
Academics
How many credits do I need to take to be a full-time student?
You need to be enrolled in 8 credit hours to be considered a full-time student. Find more information about status on the graduate bulletin.
