Paying for Your Graduate Education

Though a graduate degree can earn you more money, many students may need assistance with paying for their education. Examples of financial aid available to NMU's graduate students include:

  • Federal Loans
  • Federal Work-Study
  • Donor-Funded Scholarships
  • Graduate Assistantships
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Student Loan Deferment
  • Outside Scholarships

If you are a previous NMU graduate, veteran, or are serving you may qualify for residency and in-state tuition.

You are expected to familiarize yourself with the rights and responsibilities you have as a financial aid recipient. Correspondence from the Financial Aid Office will be sent to your NMU e-mail address. Please be sure to check this account often. You can view your financial aid information online at any time by going to mynmu.nmu.edu.

KCP

Future Faculty Fellowship

The FFF Program is part of the King-Chavez-Parks Initiative which was created by the Michigan State Legislature in 1986 to increase graduation rates for students underrepresented in postsecondary education. In support of their graduate studies, fellows are awarded up to $20,000 for a Master's degree and $35,000 for a doctoral degree in exchange for a service obligation.

Applications for the 2024/25 Future Faculty Fellowship awards will open in the fall and close in April 2024.

Grants and Award Funding

Rural Leadership Fellowship Program

The Rural Leadership Fellowship is a paid and scholarship-supported applied learning experience for students interested in rural economic development and public sector careers.
Three fellowships will be awarded annually through a competitive application process. Selected student fellows will receive a 100% tuition and fee scholarship as part of their financial aid package for the duration of the fellowship.

NMU Internal Funding

Graduate Assistantships

Funded Graduate Assistantships are listed on our website when available or are offered through academic departments as noted in the Graduate Catalog (previously known as Bulletin). Graduate Assistantships involve an application process that varies depending on the hiring department.

Grants and Travel Funding

Northern Michigan University offers additional research funding opportunities via grants like the Excellence in Education and Spooner awards. Each year, students can also compete in the Three Minute Thesis competition. Additionally, you can also view resources for external grant opportunities with NMU's Research and Sponsored Programs Office. Individual departments may also have travel and special projects funding or may be able to identify other funding resources.

Federal Loans

Degree-seeking graduate students may be eligible for unsubsidized loans through the Direct Loan program. Students seeking assistance through this loan program will need to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form and designate Northern Michigan University as a recipient. Our federal school code for the FAFSA is 002301.

Overage Checks: To be eligible for an overage, your financial aid must be more than your tuition and fees and all document requirements must be completed. Overage checks are generally available on the first day of classes each semester by either signing up for direct deposit or picking the check up in person. The Student Service Center handles the distribution of overage checks.

Student Loan Deferment

If you have been out of school and paying on your federal student loans, you may be eligible to defer these payments. You must be enrolled at least half time (4 credits) in order to qualify. NMU sends rosters of qualifying students to a federal database. If you are not automatically picked up on one of these lists, and are still receiving bills once you’ve begun classes, you can stop by the Financial Aid Office located in the Hedgcock Student Services building to complete a paper deferment form.

Federal Work-Study

FWS funding is sometimes available, but limited, for graduate students.

*Please refer to the Financial Aid Federal Work-Study webpage for up-to-date steps in applying for an FWS.

Donor-Funded Scholarships

The following is a list of scholarships offered through the NMU Foundation for which Graduate students are eligible to apply. The application period for these scholarships is currently closed. When applications reopen, students can submit an application through the online system by logging in through MyNMU and clicking on Financial Aid – Donor-funded Scholarships. Newly admitted students can click NMU Foundation Donor-funded Scholarships on the Admitted to NMU tab in MyNMU.
