Baccalaureate Degree Programs

Baccalaureate degree students meet the liberal studies requirements by completing courses in six divisional areas. Total credits range from 30 to 40 semester hours.  The majority of liberal studies courses at Northern Michigan University are four semester hours, so normally students meet divisional requirements by taking either eight or four hours of appropriate courses. Transfer students and others who complete the liberal studies divisional areas with less than 40 semester hours, take additional hours in general electives to reach the minimum number of hours required for graduation. **Only those students who attended the Michigan Academy after October 1, 1987, will receive NMU academic credit toward this degree.  Students from out of state or those who attended the academy prior to October 1, 1987, must present evidence of academy curriculum which will be evaluated on an individual basis to determine academic credit for the degree.

 

PL 180 and PL 184 are recommended for foundations of humanities.  PY 100L is recommended for the foundations of natural sciences/mathematics.  SO 101 is recommended for the foundations of social sciences.

 

Notes:  This degree is designed for individuals who are already employed in the corrections field.  Students must submit original certification of their academy training to the Criminal Justice Department, one semester prior to the semester they intend to graduate in order to receive advanced placement credit for the Jail Academy (six credits) or State Corrections Academy (twelve credits).

*Criminal justice electives are planned with a criminal justice advisor and an advisor from the student's major department.  Students can obtain a copy of the minor form from the Criminal Justice Department secretary or the Criminal Justice Department Web site.  The students plan for a minor should be approved no later than the end of the junior year and filed with the Degree Audits Office.
