College
of Graduate Studies and Research at NMU
Admission to Graduate Studies
Admission to the graduate college of
Northern Michigan University is open to bachelor degree graduates
of regionally accredited four-year collegiate institutions in the
United States, or graduates with equivalent degrees from
institutions in other countries who have an overall grade point
average of at least 3.00 on a scale of 4.00. Official transcripts
of all collegiate course work must be submitted by the appropriate
institutions to the Graduate Office. Individual departments may
have requirements above the minimums.
Post-baccalaureate students enrolling in graduate courses but not
pursuing a graduate degree or program may enroll as an
unclassified student for up to 8 credits. Courses taken prior to
formal application and admission to the College of Graduate
Studies can only be used in a subsequent graduate degree or
certification program with the approval of the advisor.
Election of Graduate Courses by Seniors
A senior within 12 credit hours of
graduation with at least a 3.00 overall grade point average and a
3.0 GPA in the area of concentration may petition to enroll for a
maximum of eight credit hours of graduate credit. These credits
may be applied toward the undergraduate degree at the department’s
discretion, or toward a master’s degree from Northern Michigan
University, but not both. In general these credits will not be
accepted in transfer by another institution.
