What is the First Year Experience Program?

FYE was established in 1995 as a beneficial program designed to focus on the first year student as they make the transition from high school to college.  The program provides academic support for classes, knowledge about campus and community resources, and helps students develop a social peer network.

Who is FYE for?

The first year experience program is open to most first-time freshmen who want to further their academic career.

The Block

When you choose to participate in FYE, you pre-register prior to arriving on campus for a "block" of courses.  FYE offers several major-specific blocks as well as blocks that focus on liberal studies courses.  In your block, you will have the same classes and professors as the other students in your group.  This offers you an excellent opportunity to develop friendships, form study groups, and experience courses with others who are pursuing similar academic interests.

UN 100: Freshman Seminar

The freshman seminar course featured in many of the blocks is designed to introduce you to college life and expectations.  Class sections are small, focus on discussions, and include a variety of activities.  The UN 100 course is co-taught by a faculty member and a teaching intern, who is a junior or senior.  UN 100 is a two-credit elective course that counts toward graduation, grade point average, and financial aid.

What are FYE's Goals?

To help you develop strategies and attitudes to maximize academic success. Also to familiarize you with campus resources and how to use them, and to assist you in developing positive relationships with faculty, staff, student leaders, and peers.

How Can I Find Out What Blocks are Being Offered?

  2. all the FYE office

  3. Sign up by using the secure registration page on our Web page at www.nmu.edu/fye.
