Transportation Issues
If you plan to park your vehicle on campus, it must be registered with
the Northern Michigan University Public Safety Department. Be
sure to ask for the Ordinance Booklet. It contains the map which
designates all of the parking lots. Become familiar with those
reserved for commuter student parking. You may find a parking lot
which is close to your classes, but not always available. A
rerouting to another lot may force you to get more exercise than
you would like, but the time taken will be shorter than the time
you would spend circling a full parking lot!
If you are on a tight budget, ask Public Safety about the special
commuter vehicle registration stickers for one of the lots on the
edge of campus. Motorcycles and bicycles must also be registered,
but registration for bicycles is provided free of charge.
A Car Pooling Network service is provided to some of the communities in
the Upper Peninsula from
which a large number of students commute. These include Escanaba/
Gladstone, Gwinn, Houghton/Hancock, K.I. Sawyer, Munising,
Negaunee, Ishpeming, and Iron Mountain/Kingsford and others.
Approximately one month before the beginning of the fall
semesters, over 1200 students from these areas are contacted by
mail and invited to register for the car pooling network program.
This service is provided by the Dean of Students Office, telephone
906-227-1700.
Bus Services are provided in the City of Marquette and Marquette County. The
routes and schedules for all services may be obtained from the
Marquette County Transportation System by calling 906-225-1112.
The Dean of Students Office distributes the printed schedules. |
