For New Teachers

  • Remember that other teachers have problems with classroom management, too
  • Know the procedures and protocols for student discipline
  • Utilize your mentor's expertise and experience
  • Nothing works better than regular parent contact
  • Never lose your cool

  • Make sure your mentee has copies of the student handbook and disciplinary action guidelines for your school
  • Provide your mentee with support and positive suggestions for any management issues that arise
  • Observe your mentee in the classroom and provide constructive criticism where appropriate

  • Utilize informal observations to identify problems before they become too large
  • Allow new teachers the opportunity to find their own equilibrium. Don't intervene too often or for trivial reasons
  • Regulary review the school and district student handbook and disciplinary action policies. Update as needed
