Year Two: Time Management, Recordkeeping, Supplies & Materials Management

For New Teachers

  • Time management is one of the critical issues faced by new teachers for whom every lesson requires a new plan. Use some of the tools noted here to help you control your life.
  • Keeping up-to-date and accurate records of student performance and parental and agency contacts is critical. Develop a plan, and learn your school's record-keeping system.
  • In these days of shrinking budgets you need to be fiscally responsible for your supplies and materials. Creative financing can really help your class.

For Mentors

  • Share your time management successes with your mentee.
  • Spend some time with your mentee going over your school's recordkeeping system. Make suer s/he has the appropriate passwords for computer access.
  • Let your mentee know what materials and supplies come from general funds, from department funds, or classroom funds. Outline the process for requesting new items not on any list.
  • Identify any creative financing you've done to get new items in your own classroom.

For School Administrators

  • Actively seek funding from grants or foundations to bolster your coffers. Support your teachers in their efforts to bring additional funds into their classrooms.
  • Provide concise budgets for each teacher so they can effectively plan for expenses.
  • Make sure each teacher knows how to access and use the school's recordkeeping system.
  • Distribute copies of the school's student recordkeeping policies to your staff, as well as a clear indication of the schools policies regarding confidentiality.
