A typical daytrip from the program:

  • A sunny Saturday - we take the train to the ancient village of Melk on the Danube; coffee and pastry on the way
  • Walking from the train station, rising above us on a rock outcropping, you see the historical Abbey of Melk and we climb the ancient steps for a tour of the monastery – one listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Within this Baroque gem, we visit the library that inspired Umberto Eco’s novel and movie “The Name of the Rose” before enjoying a snack and tour of the gardens and returning to the village for lunch – Italian perhaps?
  • Next we embark for a boat trip through the Danube gorge – the storied Wachau – where We have an afternoon drink on board as we sail past medieval castle ruins and village vineyards before we dock at the medieval village of Dürnstein (also a heritage site)
  • For those who dare, we hike to the ruins of the castle where Richard the Lionhearted was held prisoner (true) while Robin Hood fought for his ransom money (not true)
  • That evening, beneath the early summer shade of a vineyard arbor, we have a leisurely and hearty dinner in a medieval building beneath the city walls with views of the Danube before returning home.
