FORMAL RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

A. Minutes:
1. That the minutes of the May 1, 2009, meeting of the Board be approved.
B. Gifts, Grants, Agreements and Contracts:
1. A gift to the Engineering Technology Department from Allen and Kathy Solka, Ishpeming, MI, a quilt and quilt hanger, both homemade ($500 value).
2. A gift to the School of Art and Design from Richard W. Wise, Lenox Village, MA, 15 copies of “Secrets of the Gem Trade” by Richard W. Wise ($613 value).
3. A gift to the Technology and Occupational Sciences Department from Allen and Kathy Solka, Ishpeming, MI, a handmade, handcrafted quilt w/ designer fabrics ($700 value).
4. A gift to the Department of Engineering Technology from TEAMTECH Motorsports Safety, Inc., Saginaw, MI, a canopy and tent with harness, helmet support, and arm restraints ($950 value).
5. The grant between the Michigan Humanities Council and Northern Michigan University, to host one day symposium on filmmaking with a focus on the making of the movie, Anatomy of a Murder, in Marquette County in 1959, in the amount of $500, with an additional amount of $450 from the NMU Archives, and an In-Kind university amount of $1,020, for a total amount of $1,970, on June 26, 2009, under the direction of Mr. Marcus Robyns.
6. The Comcast Community Collaboration Initiatives grant from the Volunteer Centers of Michigan, to support the second year of an initiative with Teaching Family Homes that provides youth in residential foster care at Teaching Family Homes with mentors from NMU who encourage a healthy lifestyle and positive decision making, in the amount of $5,000, for the period of February 15, 2009, through January 31, 2010, under the direction of Mr. David Bonsall.
7. The grant from the Michigan Department of State to purchase two (2) training motorcycles for the Michigan Motorcycle Safety Program, in the amount of $7,088, for the time period May 28, 2009, through September 30, 2009, under the direction of Mr. Cameron Hadley.
8. The grant from the State of Michigan, Department of Community Health, to fund scholarships for nursing students ($6,000 for RN to BSN students and $12,000 for MSN-Education students), in the amount of $16,000, for the period of October 1, 2008, through September 30, 2009, under the direction of Dr. Kerri Schuiling.
9. The time period be extended from May 31, 2009, to May 31, 2010, for the grant between Northern Michigan University and Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Water Resources Division, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, to provide research on small mammal communities in the Grand Sable Dunes of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, in the amount of $17,000, under the direction of Professor John Bruggink.
10. The Digital Television Transition Grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, to cover costs associated with the transition from analog to digital television, in the amount of $21,467, under the direction of Mr. Eric Smith.
11. The Michigan Initiative for Innovation & Entrepreneurship Grant for student internships and special topic speakers related to entrepreneurship, in the amount of $25,000, with an additional In-kind University amount of $13,250, for a total award of $38,250, for the period July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010, under the direction of Dr. Sam Graci.
12. The time period be extended from April 30, 2009, to May 31, 2010, for the agreement between the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and Northern Michigan University to study the population dynamics of threatened orchidaceous in the Grand Sable Dunes at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, in the amount of $70,163, under the direction of Dr. Alan Rebertus.
13. The grant between the National Writing Project Corporation and Northern Michigan University, to conduct a National Writing Project site, in the amount of $51,000, with an additional amount of $19,040 ($3,500 from the Education Department, $3,500 from the College of Professional Studies, $3,000 from the College of Arts and Sciences, $500 from the English Department, and $8,540 from tuition and fees), and an In-Kind University amount of $37,763 ($16,393 from the Education Department and $21,370 from the College of Arts and Sciences), for a total award of $107,803, extending the contract to June 30, 2010, under the direction of Dr. Mark Smith.
14. The Radio Community Service Grant bonus from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, to provide continued support for augmenting the capability of public broadcasting stations to expand the quality and scope of public radio to the community, in the amount of $32,500, bringing the total award to $163,875, for the period October 1, 2008, to September 30, 2010, under the direction of Mr. Eric Smith.

The B.J. Stupak Olympic Scholarship Program grant from the U.S. Department of
Education, to provide scholarships to selected Olympic aspiring athletes
training at any one of the four Olympic Training Centers and pursuing a
post-secondary education, in the amount of $977,000, for the period of
October 1, 2009, through September 30, 2010, under the direction of Mr. Jeffery
Kleinschmidt.
