July 8, 2010

The Academic Affairs Committee meeting was called to order at 1:07 p.m.
Charter School Board Approvals
Mr. William Pistulka, Charter Schools Officer, presented a proposed list of board member appointments and renewals for the Nah Tah Wahsh Public School Academy and North Star Academy.
The motion duly made and seconded the Committee recommends to the Board of Trustees the approval of the list of board members. This motion is part of the formal recommendations.
Mr. Pistulka also provided a brief update on Charter School activities.
Technical & Community College Programs Road Map
Dr. Paul Lang discussed a draft of the proposed strategic plan for Technical & Community College Programs which is identified as a priority in the Road Map to 2015. NMU currently has 27 associate, certificate and vocational diploma programs.
New Program – German Studies Bachelor Degree
Dr. Tim Compton, Head, Modern Languages and Literature, presented a proposal for a new German Studies bachelor degree program. The Provost recommended approval of the program.
After motion duly made and seconded the Committee recommends to the Board of Trustees the approval of this program. This motion is part of the formal recommendations.
Dr. Compton reported on the progress of the Title VI grant awarded to NMU by the U.S. Department of Education. The grant’s main focus is a faculty development program on middle-eastern studies.
Good of the Order
Dr. Susan Koch, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, provided the Committee with a brief update on current activities within the Academic Affairs Division.
Mr. LaSalle thanked the Committee and the meeting was adjourned at 2:00 p.m.
