FORMAL RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

NORTHERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY – Marquette, Michigan

July 9, 2010

 

A.     Minutes:

 

 1.     That the minutes of the April 30, 2010, meeting of the Board be approved.

 

 

B.      Gifts, Grants, Agreements and Contracts:

 

1.    A gift to the Department of Technology and Occupational Sciences from Ms. Kelsey O’Neil, Marquette, MI, Redken Swatch books and educational pamphlets ($300 value). 

 

2.    A gift to the Department of Art and Design from Ms. Susan Galbraith, East Jordan, MI, black and white photograph – “Repent” by D. James Galbraith – Year 1979 and Exhibition poster for D. James Galbraith.

 

3.    The grant between Northern Michigan University and Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada, as represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, to promote Canadian Studies Field courses to Canada for undergraduate students, in the amount of $4,745.63, with an additional amount of $9,000 in travel expenses paid by the students and $1,557 from the College of Arts and Sciences, for a total amount of $15,302.63, for the time period of October 26, 2009 through September 30, 2010, under the direction of Dr. Michael Broadway.

 

4.    The U.S. Department of Education awards, for the period July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011, in the amount of $311,037 for the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant Program and $862,931 for the Federal Work Study Program, under the direction of Mr. Mike Rotundo.

 

5.    The grant between the National Writing Project Corporation and Northern Michigan University, to conduct a National Writing Project site, in the amount of $46,000, with an additional amount of $24,090 ($3,500 from the Education Department, $3,500 from the College of Professional Studies, $3,000 from the College of Arts and Science, $500 from the English Department, and $13,590 from tuition and fees), and an In-Kind University amount of $42,078 ($16,266 from the Education Department and $21,212 from the College of Arts and Sciences, and $4,600 in waived indirect costs), for a total award of $112,168, extending the contract to June 30, 2011, under the direction of Dr. Mark Smith.

 

6.    The Olympic Scholarship Demonstration grant from the U.S. Department of Education, to provide scholarships to selected Olympic-aspiring athletes training at any one of the four Olympic Training Centers and pursuing a post-secondary education, in the amount of $977,000, for the period of

       October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011, under the direction of Mr. Jeffery Kleinschmidt.

Emeritus:

  14.  That Dr. Stephen Peters be granted the status of Professor Emeritus of Library Science, effective September 1, 2010.

  15.  That Dr. Kathleen Thompson be granted the status of Professor Emeritus of Nursing, effective August 1, 2010.

  16.  That Professor Mary Wallace be granted the status of Professor Emeritus of Nursing, effective August 1, 2010.

 

 

D.     Degrees

1.           That the final list of the May 2010 graduates and the preliminary list of August 2010 graduates be approved.  The lists are on file with the Secretary of the Board of Trustees.

 

E.      Property and Finance

 

1.         A program fee of $75 per semester be charged to all BSN and MSN nursing students.  The fee will cover the cost of supplies, equipment, simulation/simulators, and lab kits.

2.         A course fee of $25 per lab be charged to all students taking a biology lab course.  The fee will cover the cost of supplies needed for lab courses.

3.         A course fee of $40 per lab be charged to all students taking a chemistry lab course.  The fee will cover the cost of supplies needed for lab courses.

 

F.      Special Items: 

 

   1.   The department previously named “AdIT Technical Services” be renamed “Information Technology – Technical Services”

 

   2.   The department named “AdIT Consulting and Support Services” be renamed “Information Technology – Information Services”

 

   3.   That the following individuals be appointed as board members for the following Public School Academies:

         Nah tah Wahsh Charter School
