Howard D. Schultz
Whereas, Howard D. Schultz, 1975 graduate of Northern Michigan University, has distinguished himself as one of the Nation’s outstanding business leaders by receiving the Fortune Magazine 2011 Business Person of the Year Award; and
Whereas, he has successfully lead Starbucks back to financial health posting record revenue and profits, and a return to its core values through innovative and benevolent leadership; and
Whereas, he has built an enduring company that has used its scale of influence as a force for positive action and change for communities looking to the private sector for assistance: and
Whereas, he has demonstrated the power of corporate partnerships to address economic issues with the creation of the Starbucks Create Jobs for USA Fund and the company partnership with Opportunity Finance Network® (OFN); and
Whereas, he has lead Starbucks’ commitment to social responsibility through ethical sourcing, environmental stewardship, and community involvement including the implementation of a new profit sharing program where community organizations will share in the profits of a local store; Now therefore be it
Resolved, that we, members of the Board of Trustees of Northern Michigan University, do commend him for his leadership and commitment to guiding Starbucks to be a force for positive action in these difficult political and economic times.
