Members Present:  Dr. Sook Wilkinson, Chair, (participated via conference call), Mr. Gil Ziegler, Acting Chair, and Dr. Thomas Zurbuchen

Other Members Present: Dr. Garn Lewis, Mr. Steven Mitchell, Mr. Richard Popp (participated via conference call), Dr. Paul Lang, Dr. David Haynes, ex officio

The Academic Affairs Committee meeting was called to order at 1:02 p.m.

Charter School Board Member New Appointments

Mr. William Pistulka, Charter Schools Officer, proposed new board member appointments and reappointments for North Star Academy, Bahweting Public School Academy, Burton Glen Academy, Walton Charter School Academy, Nah Tah Wahsh Charter School Academy and Experiencia Preparatory Academy.

After motion duly made and seconded the Committee recommends to the Board of Trustees the approval of the board member appointments.  This motion is part of the formal recommendations.

Teacher Preparation

Dr. Joe Lubig, Associate Dean of Teacher Education/Director, School of Education provided an overview of teacher preparation at NMU.  He discussed national and state requirements, teacher quality, teacher evaluation, accountability and School of Education accreditation.

Good of the Order

Dr. Paul Lang introduced Dr. Linda Chen Wang, who was hired in June 2013, as the Assistant Provost for Institutional Research, Planning and Assessment and Dr. Leslie Warren, who was hired in May 2013, as the new Dean of Academic Information Systems.

Mr. Gil Ziegler asked if the practice of students retaking courses to raise their GPA could be reviewed.  This practice, at times, prohibits other students from getting courses they need.

Mr. Ziegler thanked the Committee and the meeting was adjourned at 1:50 p.m.
