INTRODUCTION TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE WINTER 2015 STUDENT COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
Chair Popp, Members of the Board of Trustees, President Erickson:
One of the special components of tomorrow’s graduation ceremonies is the student speaker’s commencement address. I am pleased to introduce the young woman who was selected as the student who will address the graduates tomorrow, Ms. Kylee Slough.
Please join me, Kylee.
Kylee enrolled at NMU in the fall of 2012. She is from Oconto, Wisconsin. She is the third generation of her family to attend Northern: her grandfather, Norman Slough, is in our Sports Hall of Fame for Track and Field; her father and his two sisters graduated from NMU; her mother also graduated from NMU and, in fact, she was the student commencement speaker in 1990.
Kylee majored in Criminal Justice and minored in Spanish. She is completing her college career in three years. She will graduate summa cum laude tomorrow with a 3.94 grade point average.
During her time here, Kylee has been involved in the Spanish Club and Model United Nations. She participated in “Live, Learn, Lead,” our residence hall based leadership program. She was a Resident Advisor in Payne Hall for one year and her community won “house of the year” for their community involvement and campus participation. She completed the Real World edge of the Superior Edge Program. Kylee served as a teaching assistant in Criminology and completed an internship at the Assistant U.S. Attorney’s Office. She has also been involved in the “School of Life and Ministry” mentorship program through a local church.
Kylee is hoping to obtain a position with the Michigan Department of Corrections, with the goal of working in case management.
The theme of Kylee’s address tomorrow is the need for courage and for the acceptance of responsibility.
Chair Popp, I believe you have a presentation to make.
