The Academic Affairs Committee meeting was called to order.

 

Faculty Presentation

Dr. Delinda Lybrand, Professor of Education, and three students gave a Power Point presentation showing the value of academic service learning and how it changed and transformed pre-service elementary education students to view themselves as professionals.  The presentation also focused on how an academic service-learning grant empowered nineteen pre-service teachers to find their professional voice.

 

Update of Gerontology Center

Dr. Patricia Cianciolo, Associate Professor of Sociology/Social Work; Dr. Sheila Burns, Professor of Psychology; and Ms. Anna Sanford, Associate Professor of Nursing, gave an update on the Gerontology Center at NMU based on the awarding of the recent federal grant of $200,000.

 

New Diploma Program, Local Corrections

Dr. Fred Joyal, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Dr. Mark Curtis, Dean of the College of Technology and Applied Sciences, presented a proposal for a new diploma program in Local Corrections.  After motion duly made and seconded the Committee recommends to the Board of Trustees the approval of this program.  This motion is part of the formal recommendations.

 

Charter School Board Recommendations

Dr. Fred Joyal, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, presented a proposed list of new and renewed board members for the Bahweting Anishnabe Charter School Academy, Burton Glen Charter School Academy, North Star Public School Academy, and Walton Public School Academy for approval.  This motion is part of the formal recommendations.

 

Charter Schools Update

Dr. Fred Joyal, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, updated the Committee on North Star Public School Academy’s efforts to move from Ishpeming to Marquette.

 

Mr. Weber thanked the Committee, and the meeting was adjourned at 11:35 a.m.
