Conference And Guest Housing Policy

Conference And Guest Housing Policy

Policy:
It is important that University conference and guest housing be available to persons associated with Northern Michigan University, or to persons referred to NMU by local commercial lodging owners when lodging in the local Marquette area is not available.

Applicability:
Any person associated with Northern Michigan University, or persons referred to NMU by local commercial lodging owners when lodging owners when lodging owners in the local Marquette area is not available.

GENERAL:
This statement establishes University policy regarding the authorized use of conference and guest housing in Meyland Hall or similar facilities utilized for such purposes.  This Policy does not apply to permanent or temporary student contract housing except as stated below.

CONFERENCE HOUSING:
Under this general term, housing is provided to groups or individuals who are participating in an on-campus conference, seminar workshop, training sessions or similar activity.  These activities may or may not be sponsored by a University department, but must be utilizing University facilities (conference rooms, classrooms, or other facilities) on a contract basis.  Youth camps or other groups (sports, music, academic, etc.) who are here for a scheduled activity officially sponsored by the University are also included in this category.

GUEST HOUSING:
This category applies to groups or individuals who are not participating in a scheduled function as described above, but who are here for a purpose clearly associated with the University; that purpose must be for other than just obtaining lodging or meals.  Guest housing is available for:

  • NMU students who are awaiting a move into residence halls for contract housing between semesters while residence halls are closed, for short durations such as awaiting a move from campus at the end of a residence hall contract period, or while taking credit producing courses whose short duration should not normally authorize contract residence hall housing.  Housing also is available to commuter students who must reside overnight on an infrequent basis.

  • High school students and their families who are visiting the NMU campus under the sponsorship of the Campus Visit Program.

  • Parents, relatives, or friends who need housing associated with transporting students to or from campus, or who are visiting the campus for activities such as Family Weekend, Homecoming or similar functions relating to NMU students.
  • College or high school students who are participating in activities in the Superior Dome, Physical Education Instructional Facility, or Hedgecock.  Those housed must clearly be necessary to put on the activity.  (For example, it is consistent with this policy to house a high school football team playing a game in the Superior Dome - including coaches, cheerleaders, and band - but it is not consistent with this policy to house parents and spectators.)
  • Other individuals whose visit is established by a clear association with the University for business, educational, or other purposes.

POLICY EXCEPTIONS:  Exceptions to the above policy must be authorized by the Director of Housing and Residence Life.
