Employees Who Serve On Outside Boards, Councils, Commissions, Etc., Where Such Service Is Not Related To The Employee's Employment Policy

Purpose:
To establish guidelines for faculty and staff acceptance or membership on a board, council, commission, etc. where such membership is at the volition of the faculty or staff member.

Applicability:
All Faculty and Staff.

Policy:
It is the policy of Northern Michigan University to encourage employees to exercise their citizenship responsibilities.  Faculty or staff accepting appointments to an outside board or commission, etc. at their own volition are not considered representatives of the University.  Such service must not conflict with the faculty or staff member's duties and must be fulfilled on their own time.  The University will not assume any liability resulting from such service.

Appointments to boards, commissions, etc., which are not related to the faculty or staff member's duties must be pursued on their own time.  Leave away from the University to participate must be taken as annual or unpaid leave and must be taken at the convenience of the University.
