Critical Information Literacy: Consciousness Raising and Social Justice in the Archives

Critical Information Literacy is a theory of learning that endeavors to impact social change. Instructors can use the experiences and voices found in the papers and records (primary sources) collected by archives and special collections for classroom consciousness-raising activities that also teach information literacy skills.

This presentation will discuss Critical Information Literacy as part of primary source literacy instruction in archives. The presentation will also include an exercise using primary sources documenting the history of Black student protests at Northern Michigan University in the late 1960s. The historical documents come from the Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives.

This presentation is a part of the NMU’s Diversity Common Reader Program and will be presented online via Zoom.
