The NMU Department of Theatre is Dance is going bi-coastal! Traveling to both New York and London for a theater, dance, and entertainment-focused experience is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the world of performing and entertainment arts. TH496 Theatre and Dance Study Abroad, 2 cr. (Winter Semester tuition eligible)

Travel Dates: May 7-18, 2024

(New York: May 7-11, London: May 11-18)

Here's a breakdown of what you might expect during your trip:

  1. Musicals, Plays, and Ballets:
    • New York: Broadway is the pinnacle of musical theater, and you'll have the chance to see some of the best shows in the world. From classic revivals to cutting-edge new productions, Broadway has something for everyone.
    • London: The West End is London's equivalent of Broadway, offering a diverse array of musicals and plays. You may get the chance to see some iconic productions or discover new and innovative performances.
  2. Immersive Theatre:
    • Both cities are known for their immersive theater experiences. These can range from site-specific performances to interactive plays and entertainment experiences that break down the traditional barriers between the audience and performers.
  3. Behind the Scenes:
    • You will have the opportunity to go behind the scenes of a theater production, learning about the technical aspects, set design, and costume creation. This can provide valuable insights into the production process.
  4. Workshops:
    • Participating in workshops with professionals in the field will be a highlight of your trip. These sessions may cover acting techniques, dance, tech/design or other aspects of theater and dance.
  5. Tours:
    • Guided tours of famous theaters in both cities can be a fascinating experience. Learning about the history of these iconic venues and their significance in the world of performing arts adds depth to your understanding.
  6. Exploring Each City:
    • Take advantage of your free time to explore the cultural and historical landmarks of New York and London. These cities are rich in art, history, and diverse culinary experiences.
  7. Networking:
    • Engage with professionals in the industry and fellow students. Networking can open doors to future opportunities and provide valuable insights into the world of theater and dance.

This trip offers a unique chance to broaden your horizons, gain cultural experiences, and deepen your appreciation for the performing and entertainment arts in two of the world's most vibrant cities. An Authentic Native American Dance Experience
Enjoy a spectacular, educational, and respectful Native American dance performance this season at the Forest Roberts Theatre! The Woodland Sky Native American Dance Company was established in 2013 and is comprised of Native American Ojibwe, Lakota, Potawatomi, Menominee, and Apache dancers. The group represents men’s and women’s Native American styles including traditional, fancy, jingle, grass, and hoop. Woodland Sky's focus is the telling of historic tales and stories using traditional native songs and dances.

A Rollicking Musical Comedy

Grease is the word! Celebrate the Rydell High class of 1959 in this iconic rock ’n’ roll musical. Meet the Burger Palace Boys and the Pink Ladies, a group of ten working-class teenagers navigating peer pressure, friendship, and love, amongst other things. New-to-town good girl Sandy Dumbrowski falls hard for head greaser Danny Zuko when the two meet during the summer, but will their relationship survive the ups and downs of high school? With a toe-tapping score that inspired the smash hit movie adaptation, this is a show you won’t want to miss!

A Darkly Thrilling One-Act Tragedy

In this ominous lyrical drama that has fascinated and inspired artists across the ages, Jokanaan (John the Baptist) has been imprisoned by King Herod in a cistern below the terrace of Herod’s palace. The young, beautiful princess Salome, Herod’s stepdaughter, finds herself inexplicably drawn to Jokanaan and, though all of her attempts to seduce him fail, swears she will kiss him – but at what cost? Originally banned in Britain for its portrayal of biblical characters, this twisted tale of lust and revenge is sure to entrance audiences.

NOTE: This production contains strong adult themes and moments of intense violence.

Celebrate the holidays with NMU Theatre and Dance! This year, audiences can maximize on the festivities with a double feature: during the first part of the evening, enjoy A Charlie Brown Christmas, a one-act musical based on the TV special. Then, return to the Forest Roberts Theatre after intermission for excerpts from The Nutcracker, the timeless ballet. See below for details!

Six spellers enter… one speller leaves! This effortlessly funny and touching show is a fast-paced crowd pleaser sure to charm audiences. An eclectic group of mid-pubescent students vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime while candidly disclosing hilarious and heartfelt stories from their home lives. As they spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, they pray not to hear the soul-crushing “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. With a bouncy score and plenty of laughs, this feel-good show is a must-see.
