About Spring Sign Up

Spring Sign Up provides an opportunity for returning students to either keep or change their residence hall or apartment room assignment for the upcoming academic year. While the process for reserving your room is relatively simple, mistakes can be made if you don't follow the instructions you've received from your residence life staff and here on this page.

Spring Sign Up Quick Links

Please contact the Housing and Residence Life Office (3502 Hedgcock) at (906) 227-2874 or vial email at housing@nmu.edu with "spring sign-up" in the subject line if you have any questions.

Residence Hall Sign Up Information

To participate in residence hall Spring Sign Up, first complete the Room Reservation Form. This form is on the housing portal, which can be accessed through the Student Services Tab on MyNMU. Once this has been completed, students will be eligible to select a room during the designated spring sign up week in March or April. Detailed instructions regarding the room selection process can be found here.

All single undergraduate students must live in a University residence hall while enrolled for classes unless they:  1) Live at home with their parents (generally within 60 miles of Marquette);  2) have lived four or more semesters in residence halls; 3) have reached junior status (56 or more credits): 4) are at least 21 years old on or before the last official day of registration for the fall semester; 5) are a veteran of active military service in the armed forces; or 6) are taking eight or fewer credits.

Note - Northern Michigan University routinely verifies the status of students living off-campus who, according to its records, should not be.

The Contract for Residence Halls that every residents signs when they move into the residence halls is for the entire academic year, ending with the last day of the winter semester.  If a student terminates their enrollment, the contract will also be terminated provided they follow appropriate procedures.

Academic Achievement Houses - A cumulative GPA of 2.75 is required in order to live in American Graffiti in Van Antwerp Hall.

If you would like a single room for the 2017-2018 year, it is recommended you sign up for the private bedroom suites in The Woods. If those units are full, you may fill out a single room request form under the “Applications” tab in the portal. Students granted single rooms may be moved into units in Quad I and Quad II that are singles with private bathrooms. There are a limited number of these rooms. For the 2016-2017 academic year, singles were only granted to Seniors.

All students living in residence halls are required to be on a meal plan. The options available depend on your hall assignment and your class standing.  Information about Dining Services can be found at www.nmu.edu/dining.

All Freshmen Students: All new and continuing freshmen students (students who will have earned less than 28 credit hours before the beginning of the fall semester) assigned to any residence hall will be required to be on the Constant Meal Pass.

Other Students: All other students may choose from the variety of meal plans available on the dining website.

Current residence hall students who are eligible to live off-campus are encouraged to consider an on-campus apartment for the upcoming academic year. See information regarding apartment sign up lower on this page.

On-Campus Apartments Sign Up Information

As you make your housing plans for the upcoming academic year, current apartment tenants must let Housing and Residence Life know if they wish to keep their current apartment, move to a different apartment, or cancel their lease. What you have to do depends on your tenant status (single student or family):

Current Tenant - Family

If you are a family, you lease your apartment from Housing and Residence Life on a month-to-month basis and do not need to let Housing and Residence Life know that you plan on returning.  You should, however, read further on this page to find out more about what to do if you're graduating, moving away from Marquette, leaving just for the summer, etc.

Current Tenant - Single Student

If you are a single student and are currently living in an apartment, your contract expires at the end of the Winter semester and you must let Housing and Residence Life know your plans for this summer and beyond.  Generally known as Spring Sign-Up, the week of March 13-24 is when you will notify us of your plans for this summer and next year.

Current Residence Hall Tenant

If you currently live in one of our residence halls, and you will be eligible to live in an on-campus apartment next year (see eligibility requirements), you may apply for an apartment at any time.  Your name will be placed on a waiting list and Housing and Residence Life staff will contact you as soon as a vacant space becomes available for which you qualify. To apply for an on-campus apartment, click here to obtain an application form or you may visit Housing and Residence Life (3502 Hedgcock) in order to pick up a form.

If you are planning to leave at the end of the semester, you must provide Housing and Residence Life with 30 days notice. You can do so by stopping by the Housing and Residence Life Office (3502 Hedgcock) and completing the "University Family Apartment Termination of Lease" form. To avoid being charged a termination fee, you must provide us with a minimum of 30 days notice and move out of your apartment between the end of the Winter semester exam week and 5:00 p.m. on June 30th (or later, depending on apartment availability, demand, and prior written approval from the Housing and Residence Life Office).

Staying in your apartment for the summer and at least for the fall semester:

If you are registered for at least eight (8) credit hours for the fall semester, you may remain in your apartment for the summer, regardless of whether or not you are enrolled in summer courses.

Staying in your apartment for the summer, but checking-out before the start of the fall semester:

If you are enrolled for summer courses, you have the option of staying in your apartment until the Sunday after your last class. To avoid being charged a termination fee, you must submit a  "University Family Apartment Termination of Lease" form at least 30 days in advance of the last day you plan on being in the apartment. You may obtain one of these forms from the Housing and Residence Life Office. You will be charged rent for the 30 days after you have given us written notice of your intent to vacate your apartment.

Please visit the Housing and Residence Life Office (3502 Hedgcock) to fill out the forms necessary to provide your 30 day notice.

Important: You must be enrolled in summer courses to choose this option.
