Dr. Steve VandenAvond became NMU’s Vice President for Extended Learning and Community Engagement in April 2015. Dr. VandenAvond came to NMU from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay where he had been serving as the Associate Provost and Dean for Outreach and Adult Access. He had been at UWGB since 2010. From 2000-2010 he was a faculty member and administrator at Silver Lake College (Manitowoc, Wis.). He was the director of the psychology program at Michigan Technological University from 1997-2000 where he also co-founded and was the director of the Center for Educational Technology Research and Assessment.
Brad Hamel has been with NMU since 1999. He began his career in the NMU Athletics Department and most recently resided in Alumni Relations as the Director of Alumni Engagement and External Relations Technology. Hamel is leading the effort to establish NMU’s Global Campus environment and quality online student experience. The establishment of “Concierge Services” including, recruitment, admissions counseling, enrollment specialist, and continual academic advising makes NMU’s Global Campus an ideal choice. Brad is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.
Carly Harrington joined NMU's Global Campus in February 2019. She is the primary academic advisor for the Applied Workplace Leadership degree program as well as undeclared and non-degree seeking students. Additionally, Carly serves as a secondary academic advisor for all Global Campus students. She is responsible for guiding students through the university system while providing guidance on course selection, degree requirements, and exploring career options. Prior to joining the Global Campus, Carly was an advisor at Michigan Technological University and the Corporate Communications Manager at Upper Peninsula Health Plan.
Dr. Lucy Johnson joined the Global Campus staff in July 2021. She guides Global Campus students throughout the application process in addition to working with the ELCE scholar on Online Course Review and faculty professional development for online teaching. In addition to working in the Global Campus office, Lucy also teaches as an adjunct assistant professor for NMU. Previously, she was an assistant professor of digital literacies at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. In her spare time, Lucy enjoys yoga, mountain biking, skiing, and spending time with her dog, Charlie.
Dr. Christi Edge is the Extended Learning and Community Engagement Scholar for the 2021-2022 academic year. Christi previously served as one of the first ELCE scholars (2019-2021). In this role, she collaborates with the ELCE team, the Center for Teaching and Learning Staff, and faculty across campus to create and implement standards, processes, and systems that provide distance education students with engaging, quality online learning experiences. Christi is also an award-winning teacher educator, Professor of Education, and the Director of the Graduate Reading programs in the School of Education, Leadership, and Public Service. Her research addresses meaning-making from teaching and learning events, multimodal literacy, narrative inquiry, and self-study of practice. In her spare time, she enjoys adventuring with her husband, three children, and French bulldog, Archie.
Mindy Nannestad joined Extended Learning and Community Engagement in April 2016 as the division's administrative assistant. She has worked at NMU since 2002 and was the executive secretary for the Dean of Students Office.
