Meets weekly on Monday afternoons. Membership includes:
- NMU president
- Two vice presidents
- NMU Foundation CEO
- Dean of Students
- Assistant to the President for Strategic Initiatives
- Chief of NMU Police and Safety Department
- Executive Director of Boards and Government Relations
The primary charges of this group are to address any university operations, issues and situations that need the highest level of administrative decision-making, as well as campus-wide university strategic planning.
The Council’s primary responsibilities are to keep the president informed of issues and situations facing the various areas of the campus the members represent, as well as to identify and share campus, community or discipline area opportunities for Northern. This group will also work as a sounding board for the president and VPs regarding strategy and potential campus decisions worked on by the Executive Council, it will oversee preparation of the NMU Board of Trustees meeting presentations and materials and it will advise on new policy and policy change recommendations.
Policy Advisory Council
Meets a minimum of three times per year. Membership consists of the president, vice presidents, NMU Foundation CEO and most of the VP's direct reports who are at the associate/assistant VP, director or executive director level of an NMU department.
The group’s primary responsibility is to give a comprehensive overview of accomplishments, challenges, issues, opportunities and current projects of each member’s area. Members are expected to provide feedback on campus discussions brought to the Council, as well as to share information provided in the meetings with students, faculty and staff of their respective areas. The group also assists with feedback on new policy and policy change recommendations.
President's Committee on Diversity
Meets monthly during the academic year. The members are presidential appointees who serve one- or three-year terms, depending on term type (student, faculty/staff or community). The group’s primary responsibilities are to make recommendations to the president of ways to promote diversity within the framework of the university’s mission and strategic plan, identify diversity-related issues and opportunities on campus and in the community that impact Northern students, faculty and staff, as well as to plan and oversee some diversity/inclusion events. Membership, meeting materials and meeting minutes are posted on the Diversity Committee website.
President's Committee on Gender and Sexuality
Meets monthly during the academic year. The members are presidential appointees who serve one- or three-year terms, depending on term type (student, faculty/staff or community). The group’s primary responsibilities are to make recommendations to the president regarding gender-related issues and opportunities on campus and in the community that impact Northern students, faculty and staff.
President's Compliance Committee
The President’s Committee on Compliance is an action and advisory council to the President charged to mitigate compliance risk to the university. The committee will enhance and support the university’s internal controls governing compliance with laws, regulations, and other external entity requirements.
Advisory to the President on matters pertaining to intercollegiate athletics.
Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degrees Committee
The Committee's purpose will be advisory to the President. It shall maintain a pool of names of candidates for honorary degrees and/or commencement speakers and shall, at regular intervals, communicate names to the President for consideration. The President, in turn, is to recommend to the Board of Trustees names of candidates for commencement speakers and honorary degrees. The Committee may recommend speakers who do not receive honorary degrees and honorary degree recipients who are not speakers.
