2021-2022 Regional Program and Scholarship Auditions & Interviews


The Department of Theatre and Dance will be holding auditions and interviews for our BFA Musical Theatre, BFA Theatre Technology and Design, and BA Dance programs, as well as scholarship auditions for all theatre and dance programs for the 2021-22 academic year. These auditions are for students who will begin college in the fall of 2021.

PLEASE NOTE: While any prior theatre/dance experience is preferred, it is certainly not required to audition or interview for our department. We understand that not all students have had access to these opportunities and will consider students of all backgrounds and experience levels for our programs and scholarships. What to Prepare


Musical Theatre

Students will have 1-2 minutes to perform a monologue and a cutting of a song. Songs should be in the musical theatre style. Stay tuned for a short video on how to audition!

Theatre Technology & Design

Students will have a short interview to discuss their interest in the program and any past experience. 

Dance

We will not be holding live virtual auditions for the BA Dance program; please scroll down to view the video submission guidelines.

Scholarship Auditions

Students who are not interested in any of the above programs, but who are interested in the BA in Theatre & Entertainment Arts and would like to be considered for scholarships, will still need to audition/interview. Acting focused students will have 1-2 minutes to perform two contrasting monologues. Musical theatre focused students will have 1-2 minutes to perform a monologue and a cutting of a song. Tech and design students will have a short interview to discuss their interest in the program and any past experience.

Video Submissions


In addition to holding live virtual auditions, we will also be accepting video submissions for our BFA Musical Theatre, BFA Theatre Technology and Design, and BA Dance programs, as well as video submissions for scholarships for all of our programs. Please read the below carefully and email us at nmutd@nmu.edu with any questions or concerns!
 

BFA Musical Theatre Auditions


Please prepare the following:

1. Slate - state your full name and the names of the pieces you will be performing

2. One short monologue

3. One 16-32 bar cutting of a song in the musical theatre style

Your total audition should not exceed 2 minutes. Your audition time starts when you begin your first piece. Please film yourself from the waist up in a quiet location free from distraction or background noise. If possible, please film yourself in front of a plain wall or background. Please film yourself in a well-lit location. Video submissions should be sent in the form of a YouTube link to nmutd@nmu.edu. Students will also need to fill out a registration form once registration goes live; please stay tuned!

BFA Theatre Technology & Design Interviews


Interviews will be held via Zoom with the tech and design faculty of the NMU Theatre and Dance Department. They will last about ten minutes each and students should be prepared to talk about their interest in the program and any past technical and/or design experience. Students will also need to fill out a registration form once registration goes live; please stay tuned!

BA Dance Auditions


Please submit a formal or informal video of you dancing in any style. Please make sure that we can clearly see you in the video. If you are submitting a video with other dancers in it, please make sure to identify which dancer you are. Videos should be a minute to 90 seconds long. Students will also need to fill out a registration form once registration goes live; please stay tuned!

After you submit your audition video, you will be contacted to do an interview with our Dance Program Director, Jill Grundstrom, via Zoom or over the phone. Students should be prepared to talk about their interest in the program and any past dance experience. Questions about the program can be directed to Jill at jgrundst@nmu.edu.

Scholarship Auditions
