Master's degree in any program offered by the graduate school, including individualized studies

Brief Overview:
NMU does not offer a master’s degree in theatre, so we have developed a highly successful graduate internship program. The strengths of this are: (1) hands-on training at an advanced level, (2) acquisition of new skills or strengthening of existing skills, (3) design opportunities in any technical area, (4) opportunities to direct, (5) fill any production position of your interest and (6) financial support to stage regional and national auditions. Our productions are student-run under faculty supervision.

The main stage is housed in a proscenium theatre with 515 seats in a continental arrangement. Black Box productions take place on a thrust stage in a 100-seat house.

Assistantship opportunities may include the following areas:

  • costume shop supervisor (design opportunities)
  • technical theatre (scene shop)
  • playwriting award coordinator/house manager
  • theatre management/box office

All graduate internships include a teaching assistantship for one class per semester in classes such as Intro to Theatre, Directing Theory, Stagecraft, and Acting.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and a 3.0 overall GPA. Compliance with regular admission requirements of the Office of Graduate Education. Applicants must gain admittance to any one of the graduate programs/departments at Northern.
