The Academic Affairs Committee meeting was called to order at 1:02 p.m.

 

Charter School Board Member Appointments/Reappointments and Update Report

Mr. William Pistulka, Charter Schools Officer, proposed board member appointments/ reappointments for Nah Tah Wahsh Academy and North Star Academy.

 

After motion duly made and seconded the Committee recommends to the Board of Trustees the approval of the board member appointments and reappointments.  This motion is part of the formal recommendations.

 

Mr. Pistulka also provided an informational update on Charter School activities.

 

International Programs Update

Dr. Marcelo Siles, Dean, International Programs, provided an update on recruitment activities.  He also discussed enrollment trends and student activities available on NMU’s campus.  Dr. Siles also informed the Committee that the International Programs website is now available in Spanish, Turkish, Vietnamese and Chinese. 

 

Retention Update

Dr. Paul Duby, Associate Vice President, Institutional Research, presented information on retention trends, academic credentials for incoming freshman, first semester performance indicators and graduation rates.

 

Curriculum Approval Process

Dr. Dale Kapla, Department Head, Criminal Justice, reviewed the curriculum change and development process at Northern Michigan University.  The presentation included types of curriculum changes, how they move through the approval process and timelines/deadlines.

 

Faculty Work Subcommittee Report

Mr. Richard Popp, Chair of the Faculty Work Subcommittee, reported on the meetings held on July 11 and July 13, 2011.   The Subcommittee agreed on two overarching objectives: review and understanding of the existing structure of faculty work and to look for opportunities to improve the process of how work is evaluated. 

 

Road Map Update

Dr. Paul Lang, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, provided a Road Map update and discussed the ongoing progress in the Academic Affairs Division. 

 

Good of the Order

Dr. Paul Lang, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, introduced Dr. Paul Andronis as the new Department Head in Psychology.    

 

Dr. Lewis thanked the Committee and the meeting was adjourned at 2:22 p.m.
