AgroundbreakingceremonywasheldMay2orthenewJohnX.JamrichHall.TheacilitywillmeetLEEDcerticationstandardssetbytheU.S.GreenBuildingCouncilandreplacetheexistingJamrichHallwheremorethan40percentouniversityclassesareheld.Thenewbuildingwillhouseactive-learningandstate-o-the-artclassroomsanevolutionaryroboticslaboratoryarcheologylaboratoryandveacademicdepartmentofces.LocatedintheheartocampusitwilleaturethreelevelsthatlookoutontoLakeSuperior.Itwillalsoincludeaclocktowerlecturehallsmore25-40seatclassroomsthanthecurrentbuildingandplentyostudentloungestudyareas.Donorswillhavemanyopportunitiestosupporttheinnovativelearningenvironmentsinthenewbuilding.Itisscheduledtoopeninall2014.ArtanddesignproessoremeritusDianeKordichandhistoryproes-sorRussellMagnaghiepitomizethevaluableroleacultyandstaplayinNorthernscomprehensiveund-raisingeorts.Thecouplehascontributedaseriesonan-cialgitsovertheyearsthatullltheneedsostudentsandresearchindierentdepartments.Theirmostrecentandsubstan-tialgitwenttotheUpperMichiganBrainTumorCenterwhichcombinestheclinicalexpertiseoMarquetteGeneralHospitalwithresearchconductedinanNMUlabstaedbyNMUstudentsandaculty.Iwassoimpressedbythere-searchtheyaredoingsometimesevenasreshmenKordichsaid.Itisveryimportantworkthathaspracticalimplicationsorbraintumorpatients.SheaskedcenterdirectorRobertWinntoputto-getheralistotheUMBTCsmostneededequipmentandthecosts.Thecoupleultimatelydecidedtoundeverythingonthelist.Theyalsodoubledtheendow-menttheyoriginallyestablishedortheGraceH.MagnaghiVisitingResearchGrantwhichsupportsresearchattheCentralUpperPeninsulaandNMUArchivesandprovidednancialassistancetotheHospitalityManagementprogramandRecreationalServicestopur-chaseequipmentandsupplies.FacultycouplekeepsongivingNMUFoundationscholarships
