Dr. Gary Bertoline ‘74 BS
Distinguished Alumni Award
Dr. Gary R. Bertoline, a 1974 graduate of NMU, has made transformative, nationally recognized contributions to engineering and technology education through a distinguished career defined by visionary leadership, innovation, and global impact. As Founding Dean of the Purdue Polytechnic Institute, he led one of the most significant academic transformations in the nation, pioneering experiential, competency-based learning models that have influenced institutions across the country. His leadership extends to major national initiatives with organizations such as the National Science Foundation, American Society for Engineering Education, and National Academy of Engineering, where he has helped shape the future of STEM education, workforce development, and inclusive pathways into engineering disciplines.
Dr. Bertoline’s impact spans education, research, and public service, positioning him as one of the leading voices in engineering education reform worldwide. He has authored foundational textbooks used internationally, produced extensive scholarly work, and advanced initiatives that expand access to STEM for underserved populations, including the creation of Purdue Polytechnic High Schools. His career is marked by numerous prestigious honors—including Purdue’s Distinguished Professor designation and national leadership awards—reflecting both excellence and influence at the highest levels. Through decades of transformative leadership and global impact, Dr. Bertoline exemplifies the distinction and legacy recognized by Northern Michigan University’s Distinguished Alumni Award.
Jenna Zdunek ‘04 BS
Alumni Achievement Award
Jenna Zdunek ’04 BS has demonstrated exceptional professional achievement and leadership through her transformative work as CEO of the David and Thu Brulé YMCA of Marquette County. A longtime YMCA professional, Zdunek has dedicated more than two decades to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
Stepping into leadership during a period of financial crisis, she successfully guided the organization through Chapter 11 bankruptcy, eliminated $7 million in debt, and restored long-term financial stability. Through strategic planning, transparent stakeholder engagement, and effective board development, she rebuilt community trust and positioned the YMCA as a sustainable and thriving cornerstone of the region. Her leadership also expanded critical programs serving youth, families, seniors, and individuals with health challenges, ensuring broad and lasting community impact.
Zdunek’s influence extends beyond organizational turnaround to sustained leadership and service across the region. She has strengthened community partnerships, mentored nonprofit leaders, and contributed to workforce and student development through her service as a former adjunct faculty member at Northern Michigan University. Her involvement in service organizations, community initiatives, and regional speaking engagements reflects a deep commitment to community advancement. Recognized nationally by YMCA of the USA and serving in key leadership roles within the Small and Mid-size YMCA Network, Zdunek exemplifies the professional excellence, regional impact, and service-driven leadership central to the Alumni Achievement Award.
Maureen McFadden ‘16 BS
Outstanding Young Alumni Award
Maureen McFadden ‘16 BS has distinguished herself as an innovative and compassionate leader in senior services, community wellness, and civic engagement throughout Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. A graduate of Northern Michigan University’s Management of Health and Fitness program with a minor in Dance, she began her career as a Health and Recreation Specialist with the Superior Alliance for Independent Living before advancing to her current role as Senior Services Manager for the City of Marquette.
In this capacity, McFadden has transformed and expanded services for older adults across Marquette County by developing innovative programming, securing critical funding, fostering regional and national partnerships, and enhancing access to essential supports that promote independence, health, and quality of life. Her visionary leadership and commitment to excellence were recognized in 2025 when she received the Michigan Association of Senior Centers Director of the Year Award.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, McFadden has demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to community service and volunteerism in the UP. For more than a decade, she has participated in the annual Dancing with Our Stars fundraiser benefiting UP Home Health & Hospice. A dedicated member of Rotary, she also serves as a race director and organizer for youth events associated with both the Junior Noquemanon and Ore to Shore races, helping inspire the next generation through recreation and community engagement.
A passionate advocate for older adults, McFadden has championed Meals on Wheels and aging services initiatives at the local, state, and federal levels. She has traveled to Washington, D.C., on multiple occasions to advocate on Capitol Hill for the reauthorization and continued support of community living programs and services for older Americans. Nationally recognized for her expertise, she was selected to present at the National Council on Aging Conference, highlighting innovative approaches to healthy aging and community-based programming.
Committed to developing future leaders, McFadden has worked closely with Northern Michigan University to create meaningful internship and experiential learning opportunities for students pursuing careers in Health, Wellness, Social Work and Outdoor Recreation Management. Widely respected for her collaborative leadership style, strategic vision, and unwavering commitment to service, she has become a trusted advocate for older adults and a recognized leader across Michigan.
McFadden’s career reflects the highest ideals of leadership, service, and community impact. Her accomplishments, advocacy, and dedication to improving the lives of others embody the spirit of the Outstanding Young Alumni Award and exemplify the values of Northern Michigan University.
John Madigan ‘82 BS
Alumni Service Award
John M. Madigan ‘82 BS has demonstrated exceptional dedication to community service and regional development throughout his career, making a lasting impact across Munising, Alger County, and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. A tireless civic leader, he has served on numerous influential boards and commissions, including multiple gubernatorial appointments to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission and Michigan Travel Commission. His local leadership spans organizations such as the Munising Downtown Development Authority, Munising Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, and the Pictured Rocks Interpretive Center, reflecting decades of commitment to strengthening both community infrastructure and quality of life.
Madigan’s visionary leadership has also transformed the region’s tourism economy. As the founder of Pictured Rocks Days, he created a signature event that has grown into a major attraction, drawing thousands while showcasing local businesses and natural resources. His efforts to elevate the national profile of the area—including coordinating a Good Morning America broadcast from Pictured Rocks—helped drive tourism from approximately 400,000 visitors annually to more than 1.4 million, fueling economic growth and new business development. Through his advocacy, entrepreneurship, and lifelong dedication to the Upper Peninsula, Madigan exemplifies the spirit of the Alumni Service Award and the enduring impact of NMU.
