Alisha Lopez Perez

Meet Alisha Lopez Perez, a Psychology major and Communications Minor from Puerto Rico. Alisha plans to graduate in 2027.

I had no idea what I was going to do once I graduated high school. Back in my high school there was a class called Transitions and it was pretty much preparing you for life after you graduated and part of it was also helping you look for options. One day, an NMU admissions lady came to my school and she was so motivated and persuasive that I loved everything. I’m like okay, I’ll apply and it ended up being the only school I applied for. No others convinced me.

Honestly choosing careers was really hard. I wanted to do so many things and I had to decide. I chose a major in Psychology with a minor in Communications because my life goal is to help people. I feel the best way is through mental health. I don’t just wanna have appointments with people, but I want to do public speaking about Mental Health. Sometimes is easier to hear or watch something then to seek for help. I learned it when I feel I was on my lowest.

This is my first semester, I haven’t explored as much in my major, but I have to say that I absolutely love everything I’ve been learning. I had a lab about wearing THC and Alcohol vision goggles that I thought was amazing.

My favorite thing I’m involved on campus is LSU (Latinx Student Union). I’ve never felt like I was fitting in until I met and learned about LSU. Feeling like you are comfortable and like you are home has been the best thing yet.

Being a Wildcat means being strong and fierce. It means to go wild and never back down.

I found sense of belonging at NMU once I met the right people and once I started to explore the campus.

It is the best thing you’ll ever do, no regrets. It will be tough at first but you will find your safe spot.

NMU has been one of a great experience in my life.
