Laura
Soldner (English), Paul Duby (Institutional
Research) and Yvonne Lee (Occupational Studies)
collaborated on an article titled "Impacts of Internal Motivators
and External Rewards on the Persistence of First-Year Experience
Faculty." It was published in The Journal of the First-Year
Experience and Students in Transition.
Their
research examined the persistence and attrition of first-year seminar
faculty members and revealed that persisting faculty members were
not motivated by external rewards (release time, compensation or
evaluation criteria). Persisting faculty members were, however,
intrinsically motivated to continue teaching first-year seminars
due to their changed views on undergraduate teaching, increased
involvement in the lives of new freshmen, and expanded interdisciplinary
opportunities.
