Academic Affairs Committee

Members Present: Mr. Steve Mitchell, Chair, Dr. L. Garnet Lewis, and Dr. Thomas Zurbuchen

 

Also present but not participating were:  Mr. Richard Popp (via ZOOM), Ms. Tami Seavoy, Dr. Sook Wilkinson, Dr. Kerri Schuiling, Dr. Fritz Erickson, ex officio

 

The Academic Affairs Committee meeting was called to order at 2:35 p.m.

 

Academic Senate Report

Professor Rachel Nye provided an update of Senate activities.  The Academic Senate has met once since the start of the fall semester.  To facilitate their work, the Senate has 12 standing committees which have various charges. 

 

Charter Schools Board Renewals/Appointments

Mr. William Pistulka, Charter Schools Officer, proposed board member appointments and reappointments for Bahweting Public School Academy, Burton Glen Charter School Academy, Nah Tah Wahsh Public School Academy, North Star Academy and South Pointe Scholars Academy.

 

After motion duly made and seconded the Committee recommends to the Board of Trustees the approval of the board member appointments.  This motion is part of the formal recommendations.

 

Campus Accreditation Update

Ms. Kim Barron, Director of Institutional Accreditation and Assessment, updated the committee on the Higher Learning Commission’s Comprehensive Quality Review (CQR) scheduled for March 20-22, 2017.  She also discussed components of the review and the federal compliance filing.

 

New Program Approval:  Esthetics Certificate

Mr. Robert Eslinger, Interim Dean, College of Technology and Occupational Sciences presented a proposal for a new 16-credit hour Esthetics Certificate program.  Graduates of the program are required to pass a State of Michigan examination for licensure. 

 

After motion duly made and seconded the Committee recommends to the Board of Trustees the approval of the Esthetics Certificate program.  This motion is part of the formal recommendations.

 

Extended Learning and Community Engagement Update

Dr. Steve VandenAvond, Vice President, Extended Learning and Community Engagement, provided an update on activities including concurrent and online enrollment; the Global Campus soft launch, the online teaching fellows program, future online programming opportunities and Invent@NMU.

 

College of Arts & Sciences Update

Dr. Michael Broadway, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences provided an overview of the college’s mission statement, enrollment trends and scorecard analysis.  Dr. Susy Ziegler, Associate Dean, discussed ongoing recruiting, retention and advising efforts in the Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences Department.   Dr. Adam Prus, Department Head, Psychology, discussed the Applied Behavior Analysis program.  Program revisions include developing an applied behavior analysis clinic at NMU and adding certification levels for student in the master’s and bachelor’s degree programs. 

 

 

Mr. Mitchell thanked the Committee and the meeting was adjourned at 4:05 p.m.
