Bridgette Bowser

Meet Bridgette Bowser, a Public Relations major and Graphic Design minor, from Canton, MI. Bridgette plans to graduate in 2024.

I decided to come to Northern after visiting Marquette with my family. We went camping in the U.P. and I fell in love with the outdoor lifestyle.

I took multiple graphic design classes in high school, therefore I knew that was a good place to start my major search. I began as a social media design management major because I had an interest in marketing, PR, and graphics. As I got further into the curriculum, I found I enjoyed my PR courses and had amazing professors. I decided to make the switch and was able to declare a minor. With this combination, I can take more electives, gain real-world experience, and have a broader network with both traditional and digital media.

I can look deeper into my favorite brands and learn their strategies for success. The majority of the organizations we cover are all recognizable, which helps connect the course content to what organizations are currently doing.

On campus, I am involved in the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter at NMU. Being a part of PRSSA during my time at NMU has allowed me to make connections with other students, alumni, faculty, and professionals. Through PRSSA I was able to attend ICON 2023 in Nashville, TN. At this conference, I was able to grow my network, meet PR students across the country, gather advice from professionals, and hear from renowned speakers.

Being a Wildcat means community. Students and faculty I have met all have been supportive of my goals. As I am now in the upper-level courses of my degree program, the students in my classes all know one another personally. We are all encouraging and understanding of each other, like a family.

I found my sense of belonging as cliche as it is, getting involved on campus. Being around like-minded peers makes NMU feel smaller and gives me a home away from home feeling. I involved myself in free fitness classes through my PEIF membership, PRSSA, and Delight NMU on campus.

GO! The outdoors is beautiful, the town is quaint and so cute, and I love all of the locally owned places. I took a huge leap of faith coming to NMU not knowing anyone, home being seven hours away and it all turned out okay. Once you get involved and include others you will feel more comfortable away from home. It is an adjustment at first, but worth it!

I was deciding between a larger school and NMU. I was used to a huge high school and was concerned I would not like a smaller campus. I truly love that my professors know me by name, respond to my emails quickly, and genuinely care about their students and their well-being.
