Meet Derek Mohr, a 2011 BFA Graphic Communication alumnus from Wyoming, MI. Derek currently resides in Grand Rapids, MI, where he works as a freelance designer & developer.

Freelance Designer & Developer, formerly a web developer, web designer, graphic designer, social media manager

My professor & advisor Shravan Rajagopal taught me how to push through initial ideas, and iterate until the idea was complete. The level of discipline it took to keep exploring design options when something was already "good enough" was what ended up helping me go off completely on my own.

Find work anywhere. Creating projects in a 400 level class will teach you great fundamentals, but they're useless if you can't communicate them to the business owner that needs a new logo. Knowing what to do is great, but the more you learn to sell design work to the people that actually need it will be how you learn to stay in the design field long term. Also, and I know this is asking a lot (truly), but being able to follow through with a project from start to delivery will get you the referral, which is the only real way to get your name out with some notoriety behind it.
