English Language Institute
The English Language Institute (ELI) is designed to prepare international students, who do not meet the English language proficiency requirements to study at the university, for their undergraduate and graduate coursework at NMU.
The ELI requires that all skills work together to create a holistic program. Therefore, it is important for faculty and students to work across the curriculum to integrate and support the learning process. The ELI is a competency based, task based/project based program that centers on student needs and interests.
The ELI is a credit-bearing program containing four core courses and two non-core courses. Credits earned in the ELI will not apply toward graduation from NMU. Full-time students are required to take all four core courses and one non-core courses each semester for a total of 20 contact hours/week (25 hours/week in the summer).
The Intensive English Program has five (5) levels of English proficiency. New students will take the ELI placement test and will be enrolled in the appropriate level of the program based on their scores.
