COS 182 Hair Type Differences 2 cr.  (2-0-0)

This course focuses on types of hair loss and their causes, especially as they apply to natural hair. Students understand and apply treatment procedures for hair loss and learn to identify, name and describe various hair diseases, disorders and treatments.

COS 183 Managing Hair Texture 2 cr.  (2-0-0)

This course provides information and skills related to hair shaft structure, chemical composition of hair, hair types and texture properties, hair analysis and qualities, hair growth cycles, phases of hair growth and structural differences of textured hair, the importance of hair cutting, braiding designs and natural texturizing techniques, and the use of shampoos and herbal treatments. Students learn foundational terms and the benefits of transitional and protective styling.

COS 188 Applied Cultural Hair Services 8 cr.  (0-0-17)

In this lab, students learn the fundamental application of single box braids, afro-twist extension, the afro-weave, the mixed texture afro-weave and the flexirod set, sculpted cornrows with feed-in technique, large twist extensions, crochet weave and coils, twist extensions, enhancing natural curl, spiral rod set, yarn braids, Nubian coils, non-surgical wig construction, loc groom and style for men, loc groom and style for women and other advanced techniques, and to effectively communicate with and serve clients seeking natural hair care.
