Survey of Jazz, from its Origins to the Present

MU 320 Survey of Jazz, from its Origins to the Present 4 cr.

This course explores jazz from its origins at the turn of the century to its present forms. Emphasis will be on the music itself, with some consideration of the socio-cultural situations that act as catalysts to the music’s various stylistic features.

Body Mapping for Musicians

MU 290 Body Mapping for Musicians 1 cr.

Inaccurate mental concepts (body maps) limit musical technique and expressiveness,  increasing the likelihood of long-term injury. Students combine anatomical study with personal movement exploration to improve the quality and expressiveness of movements for practicing and performing.

Double Reeds Class

MU 280D Double Reeds Class 1 cr.

Designed for instrumental music education majors. Fundamentals of playing the oboe, bassoon, and English horn, with emphasis on pedagogy.

Performance 2 - Vocal

MU 271 Performance 2 - Vocal 1 cr.

A continuation of MU 171. One individual lesson per week focusing on continued technical and artistic growth in the performance of more advanced repetoire.

Notes:

May be repeated for credit as often as required.

Piano Pedagogy

MU 265 Piano Pedagogy 2 cr. Specialized training in materials and techniques for piano teachers. The course includes a survey of current methods, observation of individual and group lessons, preparation of mini-lessons and discussion of business procedures for establishing a piano studio.
