Ceramics Seminar: Design Practices

AD 422A Ceramics Seminar: Design Practices 4 cr.

Production of a body of work that supports the student’s personal concern for form supported by ideological and theoretical sources. Individual solutions for construction and finishing are stressed with a focus on current trends and issues in ceramics.

Drawing/Painting: Seminar I

AD 420A Drawing/Painting: Seminar I 4 cr.

Students will plan, research, and execute self-driven projects. The content of these projects will follow consistent and coherent themes determined by the student. Content will be supported by readings, discussions, critiques, and supported exposure to professional opportunities in the field.

Illustration: Advanced Studio I

AD 419A Illustration: Advanced Studio I 4 cr.

Development of conceptual and problem-solving abilities within the framework of varied commercial situations, while encouraging personal artistic voice. Ideation, research, and the professional practice of an illustrator are emphasized.  

Graphic Design: Interactivity Seminar

AD 418A Graphic Design: Interactivity Seminar 4 cr.

Students will learn to apply research, problem solving, and the user’s experience to interactivity. This course’s focus is on app/software interfaces and other media, wayfinding and the conceptual development of interaction and design.

Digital Cinema: Production

AD 412A Digital Cinema: Production 4 cr.

Continued development of digital video and audio production skills and knowledge emphasizing development, production, and realization of a group practicum project; professional portfolio and statement development. 

Human Centered Design: Design Research

AD 411A Human Centered Design: Design Research 4 cr.

 This course is a collaborative project based studio that focuses on problem finding as well as problem solving. Students will develop skills in exploratory research of trend, behavior, culture and concept.

Senior Exhibition

AD 403 Senior Exhibition 2 cr. Preparation of a collection of work to demonstrate the student’s professional competence for exhibit presentation in a department-approved gallery.

History of Modern Craft and Design

AD 365 History of Modern Craft and Design 4 cr.

History of modern craft and design considers the course of progressive design in the applied arts (product and furniture design) from the nineteenth century to the present. Major movements in design history including the arts and crafts movement, art nouveau, modernism and postmodernism are investigated within a chronological framework. Social issues affecting design—from the relationship between design and consumerism, design and modern management practices, and design and national identity, to design ethics—will be considered within their historical contexts. Non-western design traditions are included.
