Secondary Education Integrated Science Major

The Biology, Chemistry, Education, Geography and Physics departments cooperatively offer this program to students interested in certification to teach science at the secondary-school level from an integrated science perspective. Students with this major must minor in either biology education, chemistry education, earth science education or physics education. The major prepares students to be endorsed both in integrated science and in the specific discipline of the major.

Advising for this major is provided by faculty in the School of Education.

Students with a major in secondary education integrated science must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or greater overall, in the major, and/or minor(s) with no grade below a "B-" in the professional education sequence and no grade below a "C" in the major and/or minor(s).

Depending upon the minor chosen, students complete their 56-62 credits of general science curriculum as stated in the four minor options (biology, chemistry, earth science or physics).

Note: MA 111 College Algebra for Calculus Preparation is required for many of the courses in this program.

Completion of this major’s required English courses and the professional education sequence leads to certification as a secondary school teacher in English.

Students with a major secondary education English must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or greater overall, in the major, and/or minor(s) with no grade below a "B-" in the professional education sequence and no grade below a "C" in the major and/or minor(s).

Environmental Studies and Sustainability Major

Provides an introduction to quantitative and qualitative methods of assessing and analyzing humankind’s impact upon the environment.

As a requirement for graduation, all non-teaching earth, environmental and geographical sciences department majors must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.25 for all courses constituting the major curriculum. Exceptions must be requested via petition to the department's appeal committee.

Social Studies Component - All students in the elementary education curriculum must complete a 15 credit hour social studies requirement. Any AN, EC, HS, PS or SO prefixed course fulfills this requirement, as well as ED 101, FR 310, GC 100, GC 101, GC 164, GC 300, GC 305, GR 310, GC 360, HL 322, NAS 204, NAS 310, NAS 315, PL 270 and SN 314. These credits can be double counted with other program requirements.

This major does not require a minor.

 

Elementary Education Spanish Minor

Students with a minor in Spanish education must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or greater overall, in the major, and/or minor(s) with no grade below a "B-" in the professional education sequence and no grade below a "C" in the major and/or minor(s).

TEACHER CERTIFICATION

To qualify for teacher certification in Spanish, in addition to course requirements, students must also meet the following criteria:

  • Pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) for Spanish (#28).
  • Achieve state and nationally-accepted ratings (with a minimum of Advanced Low) on an officially administered American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI or OPIc) in Spanish.
  • Achieve state and nationally-accepted ratings (with a minimum of Advanced Low on the ACTFL scales) in reading, writing, and listening in Spanish, as evaluated at NMU.
  • In accordance with state requirements, spend a minimum of four weeks of planned time in a Spanish-speaking country.  (Twelve or more weeks are recommended, and aid students significantly in achieving passing results on the MTTC exam and the ACTFL ratings.)
  • Students who fulfill the SN 310 or SN 312 requirement through a transfer course or a course taken abroad must present a cultural portfolio (4-6 pages) for the corresponding area (Spain for SN 310 or Spanish America for SN 312) citing key perspectives of the target culture, connecting those perspectives to cultural products and practices, and comparing perspectives, products and practices  to those of  their own culture.
