Elementary Education German Minor

Students with a minor in German education must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or greater overall, in the major, and/or minor(s) with no grade below a 'B-" in the professional education sequence and no grade below a "C" in the major and/or minor(s).

TEACHER CERTIFICATION

To qualify for teacher certification in German, in addition to course requirements, students must also meet the following criteria:

  • Pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) for German (#24).
  • Achieve state and nationally-accepted ratings (with a minimum of Advanced Low) on an officially administered American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI or OPIc) in German.
  • Achieve state and nationally-accepted ratings (with a minimum of Advanced Low on the ACTFL scales) in reading, writing, and listening in German, as evaluated at NMU.
  • In accordance with state requirements, spend a minimum of four weeks of planned time in a German-speaking country.  (Twelve or more weeks are recommended, and aid students significantly in achieving passing results on the MTTC exam and the ACTFL ratings.)
  • Students who fulfill the GR 310 or GR 311 requirement through a transfer course or a course taken abroad must present a cultural portfolio (4-6 pages) for the corresponding area, citing key perspectives of the target culture, connecting those perspectives to cultural products and practices, and comparing perspectives, products and practices to those of their own culture.

Elementary Education French Minor

Students with a minor in French education must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or greater overall, in the major, and/or minor(s) with no grade below a "B-" in the professional education sequence and no grade below a "C" in the major and/or minor(s).

Any AN, EC, HS, PS or SO prefixed course fulfills this requirement, as well as ED 101, FR 310, GC 100, GC 101, GC 164, GC 300, GC 305, GR 310, GC 360, HL 322, NAS 204, NAS 315, PL 270 and SN 314. These credits can be double counted with other program requirements.

Criminal Justice Minor

All criminal justice and loss prevention courses used for the criminal justice minor must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.

Law Enforcement - Associate of Applied Science

This degree provides training that will produce well-rounded and competent law enforcement practitioners. This includes, but is not limited to, competence in oral and written communications, an understanding of psychological and social issues relevant to criminal justice, the role of law enforcement in social control and in the larger criminal justice system and an appreciation for the dilemma inherent in policing a free society.

All criminal justice and loss prevention courses used for the associate degree in law enforcement must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.

Earth Science Major

Provides a thorough knowledge of Earth's physical environment, including its geology, weather and climate, astronomical relationships and hydrology.

As a requirement for graduation, all non-teaching Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences Department majors must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.25 for all courses constituting the major curriculum. Exceptions must be requested via petition to the department's appeal committee.
