Earth and Environmental Science Capstone Research

GC 488 Earth and Environmental Science Capstone Research 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

Integrates techniques from earth and environmental science to provide capstone research experience. Incorporates relevant scientific approaches, emphasizes interdisciplinary connections, demonstrates quantitative methods and tools, promotes communication, and teaches professional skills relevant for earth or environmental scientists.

Clinical Molecular Diagnostics

CLS 426 Clinical Molecular Diagnostics 3 cr.

This course covers the theory and application of nucleic acid based technologies to detect and characterize inherited disorders, acquired genetic diseases, and infectious disease. The principles of PCR based methods, SDA, HDA, LCR, TMA, NASBA, LAMP, sequencing methods and microarray analysis are covered. The use of these technologies for the detection and characterization of human pathologies is emphasized with a focus on the selection of each for specific diseases in clinical settings.

Advanced Clinical Microbiology II

CLS 414 Advanced Clinical Microbiology II 3 cr.

This course covers advanced concepts in clinical disease caused by difficult to culture and novel bacteria, fungi, viruses, macro and micro parasites, and prions. Emphasis is placed on emerging detection and identification technologies to include MALDI-TOF MS, PCR-ESI-MS, 16s Sequencing, and microarrays. Advanced concepts involve the combination of pathogen virulence, resulting clinical signs and symptoms, and the use of diagnostic algorithms to guide testing decisions.

Advanced Clinical Immunology

CLS 413 Advanced Clinical Immunology 3 cr.

This course covers principles of clinical immunology to include: physiology of immunity, humoral and cell mediated immunity, innate and adaptive immunity, and normal versus pathophysiological immune responses.  Advanced immunological methods used to diagnose and evaluate allergy, autoimmunity, infectious disease, and transplant compatibility such as DFA, EIA, ELISA, Western Blot, and Chemiluminesence are covered along with focus on the use of diagnostic algorithms.

Clinical Biochemistry

CLS 412 Clinical Biochemistry 3 cr.

This course focuses on clinically important organic and biochemical molecules such as carbohydrates, proteins, heme-derivatives, lipids, lipo-proteins, hormones, tumor markers, therapeutic drugs, toxins, and drugs of abuse. Focus is given to structure, nomenclature, biochemical mechanism, and the use of these molecules as biomarkers to assess health and disease. Advanced mass spectrometry based technologies used in diagnostic laboratories methods is included.

Advanced Policing

CJ 429 Advanced Policing 4 cr.

The focus of this course is on the many important issues that modern law enforcement officers face. This class will examine many of the current policing issues in an effort to get students to begin formulating possible solutions to these important problems.  

Systems Thinking in Workplace Leadership

LDR 400 Systems Thinking in Workplace Leadership 4 cr.

The primary emphasis of this course will be the introduction of basic systems thinking fundamentals, i.e. defining a systems perspective about any situation or problem, solving problems with that perspective, describing and modeling a problem, and designing and improving upon system solutions.

Leadership in Diverse Workplaces

LDR 300 Leadership in Diverse Workplaces 4 cr.

This course is designed to help students explore foundational information related to diversity and multiculturalism. Students will learn the importance of understanding cultural and demographic diversity in relation to effective workplace leadership.
