Performance 3 - Strings

MU 361 Performance 3 - Strings 1 cr.

One individual lesson per week in violin, viola, cello, or string bass. Continuation of MU 261 focusing on advanced bowing strokes and pacing related to phrasing in preparation for senior recital or senior project.

Notes: May be repeated for credit.

Performance 3 - Percussion

MU 351 Performance 3 - Percussion 1 cr.

One individual lesson per week. Continuation of MU 251 with emphasis upon mallet keyboard and multiple percussion. Care and maintenance of percussion are applied. Composition and improvisation are encouraged.

Notes: May be repeated for credit.

Methods and Materials in Music Education/Secondary

MU 350 Methods and Materials in Music Education/Secondary 2 cr.

A study of contemporary music education in secondary schools (grades 7-12). The course covers both teaching and administrative procedures. Students are exposed to various philosophies of vocal and instrumental music education. Technical problems such as the changing voice and general music classes are discussed.

May not be applied toward a non-teaching major or any minor in music.

Methods and Materials in Music Education/Elementary

MU 349 Methods and Materials in Music Education/Elementary 2 cr.

An explaration of contemporary music education in grades P-6. The course  covers performance objectives, philosophical and musical concepts, instructional methods and materials, and techniques used in the general music class. Each student observes and participates in general music classes in area schools on a limited basis.

May not be applied toward a non-teaching major or any minor in music.

Marching Band Practicum

MU 345A Marching Band Practicum 1 cr.

Skills and resources for effectively administering a marching band. Includes  drill writing, marching styles, uniforms, instrument care, music selection, auxiliary percussion and flags. Students may serve as assistant drill instructors with the NMU marching band.

Notes:

May be repeated once for credit.
