Community Health Minor

The Community Health Minor is designed to incorporate a set of health related courses which will enhance the training of community health educators and other health promotion professionals.

With the approval from Applied Exercise Science and Health (Community Health Concentration) adviser at the School of Health and Human Performance (SHHP), students will take the required courses and select elective health courses from SHHP totaling 16 credit hours. A list of courses comprising the minor must be submitted to the Registrar's Office before the second semester of the student’s junior year. This option is not available to those in secondary education OR Applied Exercise Science and Health (Community Health Concentration).

Nutrition Minor

Provides an introduction to the knowledge and skills needed to help support health and nutrition related careers. This will complement health professional related majors.

Total Credits Required

All courses with an HN prefix are allowed in the minor. Students may also choose to include AH 201, AH 202, SO 120 and/or HM 205. Students should create their course plan with their nutrition minor adviser during their sophomore year. This minor program course plan needs to be approved by a nutrition minor adviser within the School of Health and Human Performance. The minor adviser will then send a statement to the Registrar's Office when the majority of the courses on the plan have been completed. Modifications in the program may be made with the approval of a nutrition minor adviser. At least six credits must be in courses numbered 300 or above.

Emergency Medical Services Minor

Designed to give students an opportunity to apply for a license in the State of Michigan as a basic-emergency medical technician.

Sports Science Major

This is a graduate school preparation program for students who have focused interests in sport and exercise science. The curriculum provides a strong foundation in the basic sciences of human biology, chemistry and physics and introductory-level study in the applied areas of exercise physiology, kinesiology/ biomechanics and sport nutrition. Successful graduates will have completed prerequisites for graduate study in more specific exercise science disciplines.

Sports Science – Athletic Training – 3 + 2 (Undergraduate and Masters)
Students in the 3 + 2 Sports Science/Athletic Training program will complete three years of undergraduate course work in the Sports Science major and then apply for admission to the Northern Michigan University Graduate School for the Master of Science in Athletic Training program. The admitted students will then complete two years of master’s level course work in athletic training. After five years, students will earn two degrees: a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Science, and a Master of Science degree in Athletic Training.

Sports Science majors must achieve a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher in all major courses. Sports Science majors who intend to pursue the Masters in Athletic Training program are not required to complete the cluster minor.

Secondary Education Health and Physical Education Major

Completion of this major and the professional education sequence lead to secondary certification which enables the holder to teach physical education in the K-12 school setting.

Students with a major in secondary health and physical education must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or greater overall, in the major, and/or minor(s) with no grade below a "B-" in the professional education sequence and no grade below a "C" in the major and/or minor(s).

Local Corrections Certificate

This program is intended for persons employed as local corrections officers. The curriculum includes course work and hands-on experiences to update the officers in the required areas of the corrections field. In-service training is offered through the Public Safety Institute, Northern Michigan University.
