Experimental Design

DATA 409 Experimental Design 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

Define quantitatively the most efficient ways to obtain knowledge from experiments with differing constraints for number of treatments, replicates, classes of experimental objectives, and blocking procedures in terms of the general linear model.

Data Visualization and Programming in R

DATA 309 Data Visualization and Programming in R 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

The course covers practical issues in statistical computing which includes programming in R, reading data into R, accessing R packages, writing R functions, debugging, profiling R code, and organizing and commenting R code. We will use these skills to develop data visualizations in R. Topics in statistical data analysis will provide working examples.

Time Series and Logistic Regression

DATA 475 Time Series and Logistic Regression 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

Introduction to techniques used in time-series analyses and logistic regression. Topics include seasonality, lag operators, construction of stationary time series models (moving average and autoregression), the construction of  nonlinear stochastic models (ARIMA), and binary response variables.

Introduction to Statistics

DATA 109 Introduction to Statistics 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

The study of descriptive and inferential statistics, with an emphasis on hypothesis testing and an introduction to linear regression and ANOVA in a statistical package such as R.

Substance Use Minor

This interdepartmental minor focuses on substance use and approaches to explain, prevent and treat substance use disorders in the United States. It is especially appropriate for students pursuing degrees and careers in which they will have interactions with people experiencing substance use disorders. All courses in this minor have been approved by MCBAP (Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals) and if the minor is successfully completed, students will have met all of the educational requirements necessary to apply for their CADC (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor) credential.

For department information or additional degree requirements, go to the Social Work department page.

Total Credits Required 20*

Students who participate in a practicum in their major, may also count their hours toward the required experience hours needed in obtaining their CADC, as long as their practicum is within a licensed substance use disorder treatment program.

*This 20 credit minor is necessary in that if students complete it, all of the educational requirements necessary for them to apply for their CADC credential will be satisfied by NMU, assuring that the student will not have to search for other training opportunities after graduation.

Evaluation and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders

SW 419 Evaluation and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

Theories on substance use disorder treatment modalities are explored in this class, with regards to population specific considerations. Emphasis is placed on learning to understand anti-oppressive practice methods in working with people experiencing SUDs with Motivational Interviewing explored as a primary method.

Clinical Practicum in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences

SL 475 Clinical Practicum in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

This course is an off-campus clinical practicum conducted at an education or medical site. It is designed for students who do not plan to attend graduate training in speech-language pathology. Students will implement treatment in the designated setting while assisted and supervised by a certified speech-language pathologist employed at that site.

Professional Issues in Speech-Language Pathology

SL 470 Professional Issues in Speech-Language Pathology 2 cr.  (2-0-0)

This course examines contemporary ethics and issues. Regulations and requirements for professional practice such as certifications, licensure, and other local, state, and national policies will be discussed. Legislative issues and third-party reimbursement issues will be included. Other aspects of discussion include academic accreditation as well as ASHA practice policies and guidelines.
