International Law and Human Rights

PS 417 International Law and Human Rights 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

The study of key treaties, documents, organizations and court cases related to international law and human rights issues. This course will apply various historical perspectives and theories of international relations—realism, liberalism and constructivism—to the study of contemporary cases and issues related to human rights and international law.

Genocide

PS 416 Genocide 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

The study of the definitions and economic, psychological and sociological causes of 20th and 21st century cases of mass political violence. The course will examine international responses to genocide and approaches to post-genocide societal rebuilding and review both scholarly material and popular documentary films to illuminate themes and provide the foundation for discussions.

Introduction to Environmental Philosophy

PL 188 Introduction to Environmental Philosophy 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

This course is a philosophical exploration of how human society influences and is influenced by its natural environment. It addresses general philosophical questions about sustainability and environmental change. In addition, it covers a variety of more specific philosophical issues, such as the moral status of non-human animals and ecosystems, obligations to future generations, food justice, environmental (in)justice, and the aesthetic value of nature.

Dance Major - Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor Science in Dance major at NMU focuses on technique, composition, performance, pedagogy, and science to create well-rounded, thinking dance professionals. Whether a chosen focus is on stage or behind the scenes, students will have the option to add on a “track” to the required coursework to create an individualized educational experience based on their needs post-graduation.

Environmental Sociology

SO 433 Environmental Sociology 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

Provides a sociological introduction to environmental problems in historical perspective. The course is organized around three central issues: 1) the nature and character of environmental problems; 2) social drivers of environmental problems; and 3) societal responses to environmental problems.

Challenge Course Facilitation

RE 355 Challenge Course Facilitation 4 cr.  (2-0-4)

This course is based on curriculum developed by the Professional Ropes Course Association and will result in that association’s Qualified Ropes Course Professional Certification. The course will cover the use, inspection and maintenance of hardware, equipment, and materials used in a challenge course setting. This course will also focus on the experiential education skills of facilitation of individual and group development.

Juvenile Justice

CJ 365 Juvenile Justice 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

This course covers the causes of juvenile delinquency as well as the history and interventions of the juvenile justice system. Important and controversial topics such as due process of the law for juveniles, disproportionate minority contact in the juvenile justice system, waivers to adult court, life sentences without parole for juveniles, drugs and juvenile delinquency, gangs and juvenile delinquency, juveniles as victims of crime, and institutional corrections will be covered.
