Pre-Intermediate Reading and Vocabulary

ELI 022 Pre-Intermediate Reading and Vocabulary 7 cr.

This course will provide students with the necessary instruction to increase reading fluency and comprehension of pre-intermediate level academic texts. Students will practice and engage in a variety of reading strategies throughout the reading process to aid comprehension of a variety of authentic texts and develop critical thinking skills. In addition, in this course, students will engage with, understand and respond to authentic texts in a more thoughtful way. This course will provide students with various strategies for building and understanding vocabulary. Students will be expected to collaborate with classmates to complete a variety of assignment types.

Pre-Intermediate Speaking and Listening

ELI 021 Pre-Intermediate Speaking and Listening 7 cr.

In this course, students will continue to develop their listening and speaking skills necessary for academic success and for appropriate participation in social communication in an English-speaking community. In preparation for advanced study in English, this course will provide students with daily opportunities to engage in small group and class discussion on academic and social/cultural topics while developing the necessary skills and resources to improve comprehension. Instruction will focus primarily on the development of fluency in the student’s spoken communication, but will, in addition, emphasize accuracy in production at a pre-intermediate level. Students will develop and practice new strategies for listening to and comprehending social and academic conversations and spoken text on various topics. In addition, students will prepare and deliver modified formal academic speeches/presentations throughout the course. They will collaborate with classmates to complete a variety of assignment types.

Introduction to Integrated Skills

ELI 014 Introduction to Integrated Skills 4 cr.

This is a project/task-based course. Students will demonstrate the ability to interact and work in a classroom setting on various themed projects while further developing their language skills in “real-life” situations. These projects may include role-plays, problem-solving, gathering information, etc.

Introduction to Writing and Grammar

ELI 013 Introduction to Writing and Grammar 7 cr.

In this introductory writing course, students will develop basic skills for writing sentences and short academic paragraphs for different purposes. The course will introduce students to the basic rules of grammar and help them increase their grammatical accuracy which they will be expected to demonstrate through meaning in their own writing. In addition, this course will help students increase their ability to use spelling, punctuation and formatting rules correctly. Students in this course will engage in the steps of the writing process, including drafting and revising at an introductory level. Finally, students will collaborate with classmates to complete a variety of assignment types.

ELI 012 Introduction to Reading and Vocabulary 7 cr.

This course will provide students with the necessary instruction to understand, interpret, and evaluate simple written English for a variety of purposes. Students will practice and engage in a variety of reading strategies throughout the reading process to extract meaning from a variety of authentic texts on common academic and cultural themes. Through engagement of text, students will begin to develop critical thinking skills and techniques for thoughtful response. This course will provide students with various strategies for building and understanding vocabulary. Students will be expected to collaborate with classmates to complete a variety of assignment types.

Introduction to Speaking and Listening

ELI 011 Introduction to Speaking and Listening 7 cr.

In this course, students will develop basic fluency and accuracy in their listening and speaking skills for classroom and social interactions. In preparation for intermediate and advanced study of English, this course will provide students with daily opportunities to engage in small group and class discussion on academic and social/cultural topics while developing the necessary skills and resources to improve comprehension. Students will also develop verbal skills needed to participate in daily activities. Instruction will focus primarily on the development of fluency in the student’s spoken communication, but will, in addition, emphasize accuracy in production at an introductory level. Students will develop and practice new strategies for listening to and comprehending social and academic conversations and spoken text on various topics. In addition, students will prepare and deliver modified presentations on topics of interest and culture throughout the course. They will collaborate with classmates to complete a variety of assignment types.

Graduation Assessment for CN Majors

CN 489 Graduation Assessment for CN Majors 0 cr.

All graduating majors must take the major field test in construction management as part of the Construction Management Program Outcomes Assessment effort. The two hour test will be given during final exam week at the end of the semester. This test will be given in the final semester for all graduating seniors.  Students must enroll for this course as a co-requisite for graduation registration as a graduation requirement.

Contemporary Political Ideologies

PS 310 Contemporary Political Ideologies 4 cr.

This course will familiarize students with the concept of political ideology, its historical development, and applications. Key texts representing the major ideologies of the 20th and 21st centuries will be studied (such as liberalism, conservatism, nationalism, fascism, socialism, etc.) along with competing scholarly perspectives on them. The course will also cover recent and/or unacknowledged political ideologies – political ideas that are influential, but which are not always recognized as ideologies.

Sport, Film, and Society

PE 375 Sport, Film, and Society 3 cr.

This elective course is designed to enhance your knowledge and understanding of society through the exploration of issues relating to the world of sports. Beyond just the typical x’s and o’s, this course will examine deeper issues as they relate to character, history, ethics, race, and gender. We will do this through the viewing of multiple popular sport films and documentaries, online discussion forums, small writing assignments, and one culminating paper project.
