Introduction to Ice Climbing

RE 253 Introduction to Ice Climbing 1 cr.  (0-0-3)

This course provides an intensive experience in technical ice climbing with the focus of the course being on developing technical top-rope ice climbing skills. Students will learn basic climbing techniques, belay systems, equipment selection, and ice climbing safety. The course will be conducted in an experiential manner on NMU’s campus and at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Munising, MI.

Trail Building

RE 252 Trail Building 2 cr.  (0-0-3)

This course will provide knowledge and instruction to equip students with trail building and trail maintenance skills. Student will learn the International Mountain Biking Association trail building standards and implement them while building and providing trail maintenance on the Noquemanon Trails Network (NTN) mountain bike trails system. Students will learn and practice the safe use of hand tools, sustainable trail design, working as a team member, and economic aspects of trail building and maintenance. 

Fish Ecology

BI 467 Fish Ecology 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

This course will cover aspects of fish ecology from individual, population, community, and ecosystem levels. We will discuss the role of the environment in determining fish physiology and behavior, the interactions among fishes and their environment, food-web dynamics, and ecosystem interactions.

Genetics for Natural Resources

BI 333 Genetics for Natural Resources 3 cr.  (3-0-0)

This course will cover basic concepts in genetics, as well as topics in population genetics relevant to the management and conservation of populations of plants and animals. There will be particular focus on the topics of genetic diversity, inbreeding, population subdivision, and effective population size. 

Methods of Social Research I

SW 208 Methods of Social Research I 4 cr.

Introduction to techniques of data analysis for social research. Applied uses of descriptive and inferential statistics are emphasized. Computers and statistical software are used as part of the instruction process.

Teaching and Research Assistant

SW 483 Teaching and Research Assistant 4 cr.

This course is a directed apprenticeship in research and/or teaching. The student will work under the supervision of their assigned professor. Student tasks may include but are not limited to helping with record-keeping, assisting with grading assignments or examinations, performing or assisting with instructional lessons and activities, and gathering, entering and analyzing data for research projects.
