Master of Business Administration Programs
The courses in the MBA programs are taught by faculty in the College of Business. Classroom instruction is supplemented by visiting business practitioners who provide valuable perspectives and important networking opportunities.
The College of Business is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. It is one of about 400 business programs worldwide to have this accreditation.
Master of Business Administration
The College of Business offers a graduate program leading to the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. The primary objective of this program is to educate future, middle and senior managers to deal with the essential problems of choice, complexity and change in today’s challenging business environment. The program is designed to develop critical thinking and analytical skills that the manager can use to make effective decisions and solve organizational problems in a profit-oriented, free enterprise economy. Therefore, the program’s focus is directed toward decision making.
4+1 Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting
The College of Business also offers a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration in Accounting. The MBA with a concentration in Accounting is a blended 4+1 program that will award the student a Bachelor of Science (in Business with a concentration in Accounting) and an MBA with a concentration in Accounting when completed. The degree requires the completion of 150 credits, which includes undergraduate general education requirements, undergraduate credits for business degree, and graduate credits in business administration with a concentration in Accounting. The Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration in Accounting program is specifically designed to prepare students to sit for the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exam and enter the accounting profession with an MBA. MBA degree requirements can be found at this link.
MBA Admissions Requirements
Applicants are required to comply with the regular admission requirements of the Office of Graduate Education. Visit www.nmu.edu/graduate. In addition, applicants are expected to have:
- official transcripts from all previously attended post-secondary institutions
- a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university*, be enrolled in the 4+1 Accounting program at NMU, or meet Special Admission requirements
- an undergraduate grade point average of 2.75 or higher
- a GMAT or GRE-equivalent (see below for GMAT/GRE waiver conditions)
- a statement of purpose
- 2-3 page essay format
- Stating the reason that you are pursuing an MBA at NMU
- Stating what unique perspective, qualifications, experiences and educational assets you would bring to share with your class. Also include your goals and how the program will help you move closer to them.
- a current resume
- 2 letters of recommendation
- applicants who are not native English speakers are required to submit a score of 550 or above on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) prior to having their application considered
- international students must provide the additional information, found here, prior to being admitted
The results of the GMAT, the applicant's undergraduate grade point average and relevant work experience will be evaluated together to determine eligibility for the program.
Application materials are reviewed by the director of MBA program and/or a three-person faculty graduate screening committee.
All first-time admits must contact the Director of the MBA Program for a scheduled Mandatory Advising/Orientation before the start of the student's intended first semester.

*Students who have already completed a baccalaureate degree (120-credit Accounting program) either at NMU or at another institution must demonstrate completion of the following prerequisite courses (or their equivalents) before they may be considered for admission into the 4+1 Master’s sequence. This information is linked to course descriptions in the bulletin and NMU transfer equivalency website.
All applicants must take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) EXCEPT they qualify for the waiver conditions below:
- hold a Master’s or Doctorate degree from a regionally accredited university; OR
- earned a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher from an AACSB accredited program, or a GPA of 3.2 or higher from a regionally accredited program; OR
- have at least 5 years of significant leadership and/or managerial experience (Additional documentation such as professional recommendation(s) and/or letters of appointment are required to demonstrate eligibility for this requirement).
While we do not have an official minimum GMAT or GRE-equivalent scores, applicants should use the following formula to determine acceptable scores.
GPA*2.00 + GMAT/GRE-equivalent >= 1050 points
Northern Michigan University College of Business seniors who are within 12 credit hours from graduation from the undergraduate program, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, can apply to the MBA program directly. Should they meet this requirement, they shall be given a Conditional Admission pending the completion of their undergraduate degree as well as the regular eligibility requirements stated above.

MBA
Applications for Northern Michigan University's Master of Business Administration (MBA) program are accepted throughout the year, but to ensure full consideration, the following deadlines should be adhered to:
Fall admission – July 1
Winter admission – November 15
4+1 MBA with a concentration in Accounting
NMU undergraduate students in the 4+1 program will meet all pre-admission requirements and apply to the master’s program during the winter semester of their fourth year. If accepted, students will begin the master’s program in the summer of their fourth year.
Students wishing to transfer into this program will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics
The certificate program in Health Information Technology is a five-course program that trains healthcare, information systems and health administration majors/professionals in the area of health informatics. This certificate will cover a broad base of knowledge areas in health informatics. Potential students for this program include:

Healthcare workers/trainees, seeking to increase their knowledge and skills in health IT to increase their employability and competitiveness in the job market.

Information systems/business majors seeking to work in the healthcare industry.

Students who are interestied in forging new career paths in the growing healthcare informatics industry.
Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics Admissions Requirements

- a satisfactory undergraduate grade point average (normally 2.75 or higher), and/or significant work experience.
