Chemistry at NMU

The graduate chemistry program, including the chemistry and biochemistry majors, is suspended, as of fall 2007. New students will not be accepted into the program during the 2007-2008 academic year.

The Chemistry Department offers two programs of study leading to a master of science degree. The program chosen will depend upon whether the student is interested in a professional career in chemistry or biochemistry.

The master of science degree in chemistry is designed to increase professional competence in one of the fields of chemistry including (a) environmental, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, or (b) biochemistry. The specific area of emphasis will be established in consultation with the graduate adviser and graduate committee, and an appropriate program of courses will be planned. For biochemistry, some cognate courses in biology are usually a part of the plan of study (see below).

Program Requirements

The master of science degree in chemistry requires a minimum of 32 credit hours of graduate courses. A minimum of 16 credits must be at the 500 level. A maximum of eight credits may be in cognate fields. Original research must be performed under the direction of a research adviser. All candidates for this degree must present a thesis based on the original research effort at the conclusion of their programs. The candidate must defend his or her thesis at an oral examination and must be accepted by the Chemistry Department and the College of Graduate Studies.

Admission Requirements

Applicants are required to comply with the regular admission requirements of the College of Graduate Studies. In addition:

  1. Applicants who do not have an undergraduate degree in chemistry from NMU should submit their scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) at the time of admission.
  2. Applicants will take departmental examinations in analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry prior to beginning graduate studies and achieve acceptable scores.
  3. The graduate committee chairperson will review the examination results with the applicant. Students who receive low scores on the placement exam may be required to take certain undergraduate courses.
  4. Before the completion of the first semester of full-time graduate study (8 cr.), the candidate should choose a graduate research adviser from among the department’s graduate faculty. The candidate, in consultation with the adviser, will establish research and thesis goals and devise a graduate course plan of study. The adviser is also the chairperson of the candidate’s oral examination and thesis committee.
