ED 588 Upper Peninsula Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute 5 cr.
  • Prerequisites: Application and acceptance as a fellow of the Upper Peninsula Writing Project
An intensive institute for educators designed to improve writing instruction through the application of the writing process, publication of texts in varied genres, study of research on writing and writing instruction, and demonstrations of high-quality writing instruction.
ED 589 Research 1-4 cr.
  • Prerequisites: Consent of instructor and department head
Student research is supervised by a member of the department. The supervisor and research project must be selected prior to enrollment in this course and appropriate forms must be completed.
ED 595 Special Topics 3 cr.

Presenting unique and timely topics. Specific topics are announced via departmental and university publications.

Clinical coursework specific to the individual development plans or educational improvement plans important to certified PK-12 educators and administrators, preschool teachers, adult educators, higher education instructors and administrators, and others who qualify for admission to graduate studies. The credits apply to the renewal of education certificates. With adviser or program approval, credits may apply as elective credits to plans of study leading to M.A.E. degree programs.

Advanced study of educational research for students pursuing an education specialist degree. Students will study research methodology as a prerequisite to completing a thesis in ED 699.

ED 621 Curriculum Evaluation 3 cr.
The emphasis of this course is on evaluating instructional programs at all levels: preschool, elementary, middle, secondary and post-secondary.
ED 630 Advanced Educational Leadership 3 cr.
This course explores the meanings of leadership and management and the application of leadership and management principles in contemporary schools. The course is designed to build upon the knowledge base provided in ED 530 Introduction to Educational Leadership.
ED 640 School Policy and Governance 3 cr.
The numerous and complex variables affecting the school. The roles of school administrators, school board members, teachers and citizens as they participate in the processes of school governance.
ED 648 Administrative Internship 3 cr.
  • Prerequisites: Consent of instructor

An opportunity to gain administrative experience under the supervision of university faculty and practicing administrators. Students will be assigned to responsibilities and supervisors according to the nature of their request.

ED 699 Education Specialist Thesis 1-3 cr.

The student develops a thesis with the help of a thesis committee. A total of 3 credits must be completed prior to graduation. Appropriate thesis forms must be completed prior to enrollment. The thesis must be approved by the thesis committee and the Office of Graduate Education and Research. ED 989 Professional Development for Educators Special Topics Course 0-4 cr.

For the professional development of professional educators: certified K-12 educators; other certified school personnel; certified preschool teachers and adult educators; community college educators and administrators; and others who qualify for admission to graduate studies. The topics address issues and trends related to professional policy and practice.
ED 992 Professional Development Seminars for Educators 0-3 cr.
In-depth discussions and readings about issues related to professional staff development for specific groups of educators, such as a school district's teachers and/or administrators. The seminars may treat the district's curricula, school improvement planning, staff renewal, school public relations or supervision and improvement of instruction. The seminars are for K-12 educators or non-certified school personnel, certified preschool teachers and adult educators, community school and college educators and administrators and others who qualify for admission to graduate studies.

A workshop course devoted to the reading and writing of fiction and to the critical discussion of student manuscripts.
EN 501 Poetry Workshop 1-6 cr.

A workshop course devoted to the reading and writing of poetry and to the critical discussion of student manuscripts.
EN 502 Nonfiction Workshop 1-6 cr.

A workshop course devoted to the reading and writing of nonfiction and to the critical discussion of student manuscripts.

  • Prerequisites: Enrollment in an English graduate program or instructor approval.

This course introduces students to the field of critical theory and to a variety of specific critical and theoretical approaches to literary, cultural, writing, and/or literacy studies. Students will apply critical and theoretical approaches in their own research and writing projects.

EN 505 Genres of Writing 1-4 cr.
This seminar focuses on the study of a specific genre of writing. The course is devoted to reading and writing within the genre, as well as studying the background of the genre.
